A British High Commission employee in Sri Lanka`s capital, Colombo, has been attacked along with a local journalist.
Political officer Mahendra Ratnaweera and reporter Namal Perera were travelling by car together when they were stopped and attacked.
The Sri Lanka Press Institute said a group of people carried out the assault. It is not clear who they were.
Mr Perera is the latest of a number of journalists in the country to have been subjected to violence recently.
The two men were both seriously injured in the attack and taken to hospital.
Mr Perera told reporters that he had locked the car doors but the attackers had smashed the windows.
`They continued to beat us with batons and clubs and escaped when a large group of bystanders gathered,` he said, the AFP news agency reports.
The British High Commissioner in Colombo, Peter Hayes, visited the men in hospital and condemned what he called a `despicable act`.
He told journalists Britain was working with the Sri Lankan authorities to ensure the attackers were brought to justice.

Not many Tamils whose family members were attacked by government officers would feel for these journalists unless these journalists contributed to comforting them.

I wonder if these attacks are actually carried out by the government. There is nothing much they can gain by such harassments, even though there is lot for them to loose. |

Oh, What a heading !
Know the difference between a diplomat and an embassy employee?
Mr Brown went even further than BBC. Cat out of the sack or what. |

Mucha-linda,
There is nothing much they can gain by such harassments, even though there is lot for them to lose
If they do stand to lose then they need to bring in administrative measures to minimise such losses - because government's losses are people's losses to the extent they do not recognize gain.

Of cause , this is state terrorism and people who bring these news items into the public are also brand as terrorists. Fortunately nobody can touch either Mr.Brown or any of us.
Some ministers take the law into their hands and use their official power to take revenge from the journalists.
More interesting thing is the way members in here are trying to justify the barbaric act.
Some says is not GOSL some argue about the difference between diplomat and embassy employee. Some wants Brown to withdraw the news item.
When a snake attacked instead of medical attention no point of discussing about the color, type of the serpent.
