Gchula99,
Sinhalese are currently challenged to evaluate if reporting LTTE cadres shot dead does also automatically qualify for competent, democratic leadership and country management. |

Yet another journalist has been brutally assaulted.
Namal Perera, Course Coordinator at the Sri Lanka Press Institute, was the victim of the latest attack.
A gang in a white van and a motorcycle ambushed his car, between Narahenpita and Kirulapone Junctions, around 6.15 pm today (June 30th).
The assailants had tried to drag him out of the vehicle, but failed.
Then, they had assaulted him with clubs.
A friend who was accompanying Mr. Perera was unharmed.
He was rushed to the nearby Apollo Hospital at Narahenpita, SLPI sources said.
The assault came barely days after the appointment of a five-member ministerial committee to investigate harassment of the media.

Tissanayagam detained till September
Tuesday, 01 July 2008 00:40
The Colombo Chief Magistrate Nishantha Hapuarachchi today (June 30th) allowed the police Terrorist Investigation Division to detain three suspects including journalist J.S. Tissanayagam, until September 05th. The court rejected an appeal by Tissanayagam s counselors to release him on bail.
His counselors argued that the police have no authority to detain anybody more than 90 days under emergency regulations.
However the TID told the court that the police have powers to detain anybody even for a year under ER.
The magistrate ruled that the suspects should be kept under police custody while an investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, representatives from five media organizations staged a protest in front of the court complex as Tissanayagam was brought to the court.
They urged the authorities to charge him or release him.
The editor of the Outreach Lanka website and columnist for Sunday Times was arrested as he visited a colleague arrested by the TID on March 06th.
