Can UNP Survive This Time? - SB & Sajith Given More Effective Power This Time

UNP: Finally waking up to smell the coffee?

-Handing over PC poll organisation to SB, Sajith marks serious UNP policy shift
-4JVP says no to alliance with Govt. at elections
-Western PC, General Election on the cards?

By Our Political Correspondent
With the dissolution of the Sabaragamuwa and North Central Provincial Councils (PC) the political realm heated up again last week. The UNP and the JVP are incensed at the decision to dissolve the Councils, with the Reds claiming that it was criminal to spend so much money on another election, because of a Government whim, especially, given the ongoing economic crisis and soaring prices of essential items in the country.

Basil rebuffed
So, when Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa called up the JVP Leadership last week to request them to come on board with the Government, to contest the Council polls, he was met with a stinging response.
As a party, we oppose this dissolution. Kindly refrain from holding this election now, the JVP strongman is reported to have responded. However, Rajapaksa refused to budge, saying the wheels had already been set in motion at party level to commence organising for the elections.

Is it really necessary?
Even Government representatives have been heard saying that it was a crime to spend millions on an election at this time. Some SLFPers are concerned that the Government would not get a good showing at the PC elections, especially, since people in the Sabaragamuwa Province in particular, are thoroughly cheesed off with the administration, for its lack of action in relation to the flood situation and the spread of mosquito borne diseases such as Chikungunya' class=black>Chikungunya and Dengue Fever.

The Government, insiders claim, had decided to dissolve these Councils, quite some time ago, hot on the heels of its victory in the eastern election. According to informed sources, the Government is also planning to hold Western PC elections, which will then prove the litmus test for a general election it feels is necessary in the very near future.

The UNP, meanwhile, has resorted to legal action to oppose the Government`s ad hoc decision to dissolve the Councils of Sabaragamuwa and the North-Central Province. The UNP filed its petition on Friday, claiming the dissolution and poll was illegal, and politically motivated for UPFA gain. It is likely that the Supreme Court will move on the petition soon, but it is uncertain in whose favour the decision will go.

SB, Sajith PC polls organisers
Despite its attempts to get the dissolution declared null and void and the election cancelled, the UNP has not neglected to get its (crumbling) party machinery in gear and made some uncharacteristic moves in the process.
Last week, the UNP Leadership, once again facing serious challenges from the party`s senior members, decided that, UNP National Organiser and Hanguranketha politician S.B. Dissanayake and Hambantota MP Sajith Premadasa would oversee the party`s organisation for the PC elections. The decision came after a `survey` conducted by retired public servants, who are UNP loyalists, revealed that serious grassroots mobilisation was required, if the UNP was to reverse its election losing streak.

Dissanayake, despite his lack of civic rights, commands significant support in many rural areas including Hanguranketha and has the kind of mass appeal that could motivate and inspire the party rank and file. The UNP is reported to be looking into ways to have Dissanayake`s civic rights restored, to make him a chief ministerial candidate for one of the provinces, if possible.

Premadasa, meanwhile, is also a good choice, given his philanthropic work with Hambantota`s poor and, his increasing popularity as a politician with a common man`s touch so rare in Sri Lankan politics today.

Despite rumblings about his disgruntlement with the inner workings of the UNP, Premadasa held out, bided his time and refused to cross over with the group of reformists, deciding to stick with the party. His sticking it out has carved for Premadasa a unique niche, with the party, more or less singling him out as the next best option for the UNP.

However, what remains to be seen is whether the likes of Premadasa and Dissanayake will be allowed to reach their full potential, given the tendency in the UNP to strike down anyone who might carry hopes of becoming part of the party`s second tier leadership.

Rumours abounded meanwhile that, Dissanayake was preparing to embark on the great crossing over to Government ranks in the near future. However, amidst Dissanayake`s own vehement denials of the claim, UNP seniors also opined that this was unlikely.
Following the UNP`s Political Affairs Committee meeting that turned stormy, week before last, several senior party members visited Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for discussions over the course of last week. Dissanayake, although he did not attend the political affairs committee meeting, nevertheless, met Wickremesinghe to air out concerns.

Dissanayake and the others are, naturally, concerned of what seems like the UNP`s unbreakable losing streak and the UNP`s inability to grasp the crux of key issues affecting Sri Lankans and run with it. These senior party men are seriously discouraged by the fact that, they are not consulted when crucial decisions are being made that affect the party`s day to day running and its performance at key polls.

In any event, the UNP`s Working Committee meeting has been scheduled for Monday and, while most party members are not expecting fireworks at that meeting, they are hoping that key issues raised about the manner in which the party functions, will be addressed and recommendations made to rectify the situation.

UNP`s Chief Ministerial candidates
The UNP is also seriously considering making former Chief of Defence Staff Maj. Gen. Janaka Perera chief ministerial candidate for the North Central Province. The party has requested his close associates to find out whether Perera would be interested in such a position.

The former military man, resident in Australia at present, is expected to respond to the overture over the next few days. The UNP is also planning to ask former DIG Sirisena Herath to contest for a seat in the North Central PC

A Brief on UNP's Internal Conflict

Cold war hits Ranil
By Munza Mushtaq
With a fresh coup attempt distressing United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, the seemingly nervous UNP Leader was seeing attempting to lure party members and also approaching rebel MPs who had defected to the government, promising them plum positions if they sided with him, The Nation reliably learns.

Highly-placed sources, who spoke on the condition of strict anonymity, claimed that over the past week, Wickremesinghe had been having one-to-one meetings with UNP Parliamentarians to test the waters amidst secret closed door meetings being held elsewhere, where moves to overthrow Wickremesinghe had been discussed at length.

Some 30 to 35 members are in support of the overthrow moves, but no one is showing their support in the open for obvious reasons, the sources said.

It is learnt that apart from Wickremesinghe and his close associates, even members of the government are trying to identify those who were heading the attempts in a bid to buy them over, but the adamant UNPers are insistent that they only want a leadership change, not a party change.

The majority of the members who are fighting for the change have cited Wickremesinghe s failure to take collective decisions as the main reason for the change, with the other reason being their loss of faith in his leadership.

UNP Chairman Rukman Senanayake is tipped to be the front runner as Wickremesinghe s successor. It is also learnt that the MPs are proposing that both Sajith Premadasa and S.B. Dissanayake be given senior positions in the party.

Outlining reasons why Senanayake had been nominated to take over, a highly-placed source said that Senanayake was, after all, the grandson of D.S. Senanayake, the founder of the UNP.

His PR skills are very good with all the party members and most importantly, he also has a good rapport with the Buddhists, the source noted. Meanwhile, it is learnt that Wickremesinghe, who was scheduled to travel to Kuliyapitiya late last week, had cancelled his trip owing to the escalating crisis.

Can UNP Survive This Time?

You should ask VP about it. If he decides, anybody becomes Sinhalese' king - including a monkey.

A brief..... continues............

He is also reported to have approached several UNP rebels who left the party and joined the government, including a now senior minister in the government, to whom he had offered the position of opposition leader if he would agree to return to the UNP fold.

Meanwhile, some of the members who are campaigning for the leadership change insisted that they didn t want Wickremesinghe out of the party entirely. Instead, they want the position of party leader to be held by another senior member, with Wickremesinghe continuing to hold the post of Opposition Leader.

Attanayake says all smooth

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake denied that there was any rift within the party and claimed everything was going smooth.
I categorically deny the speculation that there are issues with regard to the leadership. As far as I am concerned, there are no attempts to overthrow Wickremesinghe from the post of Party Leader, he added.
Meanwhile, the UNP s Working Committee is scheduled to meet tomorrow to discuss the forthcoming provincial council elections.

Ramz this plan to oust ranil has much deeper roots than you think...

this is happening at the behest of mangala to get the jvp to a common stage...first they will move ranil a bit away and get SB to lead a campaign...

for your information north central province the govt is sure to win, i don't know about the sabaragamuwa infact reports say that its not favorable to govt but for NC the govt will surely grab it...

then in the next stage it would be made to appear as if SB is also a failure and Ranil will be permanently kicked out citing the defeat.

and then will come the stage to form,in the propagated context that SB too has failed,to form the so called common platform with the JVP and chandrka on board the UNP...

the game is here my frind...

and for your information though rukman is tipped to be placed at the leadership of the UNP i know only too well that he is not interested.he too wants changes but that does not mean that he aspires the unp leadership though many have proposed him.

and this will nicely pave the way for the adulteration of the united national party with a bunch of red monkeys on its platform.

the plan is nicely set by mangala to ultimately have a following for him even from the UNP in his dream of becoming 'lokka'...

but beware...this will happen at the expense of the UNP...the largest and the most respected political entity of sri lanka....

if you adulterate the party which successive leaders have maintained in its pure form against all odds...the consequences would be un imginable...

anyways all the best...

A brief on........ continues

[ There is no move to oust Wickremesinghe

It is up to the people to compare Wickremesinghe s two-and-a-half year rule with Mahinda Rajapaksa s two-and-a-half year rule. During Wickremesinghe s period, there were no deaths of Army personnel. There was peace. No Policemen were killed. Business was booming and the rule of law was upheld. International relations were excellent. There were plenty of tourists and the cost of living was controlled. There were no abductions and killings. However, within the past two years in Sri Lanka, nearly 10,000 have died due to explosions or assassinations. Today we have no tourists, nor do we have foreign investors

By Wilson Gnanadass
The United National Party (UNP) is in a muddle. Many party members are of the opinion that present UNP Leader and Opposition Leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe, is the stumbling block in the party s forward march. Under Wickremesinghe s leadership, the party has not been able to win elections and some think he should be ousted. However, the question of replacement is one that then needs an answer since the party is seriously short of potential leaders who could carry the policies of the party forward. Wickremesinghe, therefore, is viewed by another section as the only one who could possibly lead the party.

However, laying to rest allegations that the country s only single political party, the UNP, was sharply divided due to a leadership crisis, UNP stalwart Lakshman Kiriella said there was no truth in the statement. Kiriella, who is dubbed as a firebrand for his outspokenness, told The Nation in an interview that the party was not undergoing a leadership crisis, but added that there was a move to share the leader s responsibilities in order to win elections. He said senior members and office bearers were called upon to shoulder some of the responsibilities of the UNP Leader in order to secure a victory at any future election.

This does not mean the party is divided. The party is, as a matter of fact, going through a series of changes, for the better. I understand that whispering campaigns have been carried out against the party and the Leader, but they do not hold water as they are not done in a decent manner. If anybody wants to challenge the leadership, they must do it the correct way, Kiriella charged.

SF....

I agree..... all of our politics is about a conspiracy theory adopted by many approaches now...... the goal remains as 'power'...

I don't even beleive that UNP can do any better under Rukman or SB...... Rukman has a good name (i mean family background... nothing else...), he has represented my electorate once, but couldn't succeed... people didn't like him... .i think the reason behind it was that he changed the party once...
I think, UNP should be handed over to Sajith after Ranil... we shouldn't expect Sajith to win the first ever election he comes out for...but, he can be a good leader of the country in future....

yes... anyway, we have to wish all the best for the country and the poor suffering public..... they deserve better life than this

Ramz...do not let anyone destroy the UNP identity thats all what i ask from you folks...

do whatever you want to topple the govt govts will come and go but please don't get the unp to compromise on the UNP identity...

govts will come and go but the damage you do to the UNP if you adulterate the party for petty gain of outsiders, the country will face the consequences...

SF

I think UNP is already destroyed after JR's era.... it started with Premadasa (he was a good leader of the country, but not for UNP)... under his leadership, Lalith, Gamini...etc got away.... after that UNP couldn't survive....

The younger generation doesn't know the history of srilanka.... or didn't witness the crises resulted during 1970-1977 era...... so, they keep supporting SLFP...

I think it is better to hand over the leadership to Sajith.... So, UNP can minimize the damages.... within 3-4 years Under Sajith, UNP can get into the power....
of course, not as UNP standing alone...there should be an alliance (but, never JVP or JHU)

Well said mate...it was premdasa who started the destruction...he was good in many aspects but you have very rightly pointed some home truths out...

sajith is a great choice true...but whats your thoughts on SB...i think he is not much of a bad choice either...

i have a very good idea about SB's economic policy and i can tell you the man simply has some vision and clarity.and is also fearless in articulation...

he also has some dictatorial tendencies which in my opinion,in the right balance can be a very healthy formula for a developing nation...

any thoughts...?
