The Education Ministry yesterday denied reports that moves are afoot to increase school hours in order to reduce the number of school days, thus saving on fuel consumption.
Ministry sources said the Cabinet had not taken a decision to increase school hours.
It was only a proposal. The Ministry also denied that the subject had been discussed with teacher trade unions on Thursday.
At the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (28) it was proposed to increase school hours to offset the proposed reduction of school days to four. Education Minister Susil Premajayanth would submit his recommendation on this subject to the Cabinet on June 4.
Premajayanth said this was a national issue and the Ministry would not take any hasty decision without consulting the principals and teacher trade unions, education professionals, experts in the educational sphere, parents and students.
However, General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Service Union (CTSU) Mahinda Jayasinghe said their union met the Minister Premajayanth on Thursday (29) at the Ministry along with the Education Professionals and urged Premajayanth to drop this ridiculous idea .

| If his come in to play, it will good for every one. Specially for the children and then for the Teachers( Loll..extra day to do tuition) but all in all the idea is good but what would be the saving we are talking about here? if it is a substantial savings for the country and for the poor parents, it will be a great idea. |

We will be grateful if the schools start at 9.00 am instead of 8.00 where children leave home at 6.30 without break fast and are not given time to have it as prayers and other things start at 7.30 am - till 8.00 am.
If schools start at 9.00, children have time to have their breakfast and go to school.
Currently, many children do not have their breakfast and develop unhealthy body conditions!! |

If you try to find a solution to minimize fuel usage, you should first consider to minimize usage of public vehicle for personal use. Cutting down school days from 5 to 4 is not a slotion as already students are overloaded with tuitions.
