Human rights group, Amnesty International (AI) say Sri Lankan government should investigate and prosecute Karuna for crimes committed by him against Sri Lankan citizens.
Director General of the Amnesty International, Irene Khan in an interview with Sandesaya said it is an obligation by the Sri Lanka Government to investigate and prosecute Karuna if he returns back to the country.
This is a test for the Sri Lanka justice system as to whether it can investigate the allegations against him and put him on trail in Sri Lanka , Khan said.
She said the crimes were committed in Sri Lanka and they were committed against Sri Lanka citizens. There are allegations and there is an obligation on the side of the government to investigate and prosecute Karuna.
Adding that if the government did not investigate and prosecute, there would be pressure on Karuna whenever he goes abroad but the real problem is for the Sri Lanka Government to acknowledge there are human rights violations, she said.
Referring to Sri Lanka losing its membership in the UN Human Rights Council, AI Director General Irene Khan said that AI never oppose or support any state to the Human Rights Council.
We have never campaigned against Sri Lanka , she said.
She said that AI believes that it is important that all governments with a good or bad human rights record to engage with the international community.
There has been an election process but Sri Lanka was not re-elected. We believe that should not affect Sri Lanka s obligations to respect human rights of its own citizens , Khan said.

She said that there has been high number of civilian targets in recent fighting both by the government forces, LTTE and other armed groups.
Amnesty International condemns the ways the LTTE has carried out indiscriminate killings and attack that affect civilians.
Similarly, she said, there is enormous obligation on the side of the government to protect civilians but AI has seen an increase on attacks on civilians.
Sri Lanka has the highest rate of disappearances in the world and over five thousand five hundred people have disappeared. These are enormous human rights problems. We would like to see the government of Sri Lanka take them very seriously and address them , AI Director General Irene Khan added.

AI should be encouraged to press charging not only Karuna but ALL others who were and are part of the same machine including Balasingham's widow who glorified killing using suicide bombing.
It is not fair to charge some and leave others free to rein in ball bearings... |

| AI lets put Prabakaran to trial first for crimes against humanity. Don't provide lip service to LTTE. Mind your own business. |

Security Service personnel accused of killing aid workers in Muttur

Security Forces and re-armed paramilitaries abduct and kill civilians. Already more than 3,000 mostly Tamils were abducted and never heard of.
The president tries new ways of hoodwinking the international community but has not investigated any murder or abduction and no perpetrator of crimes is brought to justice. |

Yo...yo....yo.... Irene !!!!
This is an authentic googly unlike your cricket ball thing in the Carribean ...
It was of prime importance for the GOSL to provide absolute protection for Karuna when Ranil & UNP got cold feet how to handle this breakaway. Finally, this cost Ranil the crown as Velu was fuming as Ranil had executed a medicore double cross.
But the Prez took on.
And now the those real H/Right protectors are providing real protection at no cost to the GOSL. How about that?
Now Under Article 3 of the Convention Against Torture has come to play and Karuna will remain under british protection.
The West must once in a while practice what they preach.
Now to put Karuna on trial is like putting Velu & the LTTE under the spotlight.......
provide us the show how the British will back off with their tail between the legs.
Therefore, IRENE, I advice you not put British Human Rights to the test because there is'nt any .....
The GOSL has spun a web
