AsiaSat falls victim to LTTE s airwave piracy
The latest global satellite company to be affected by airwave piracy of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is the Hong Kong based AsiaSat, which has unilaterally terminated the contract it has with NTT, the television channel of the LTTE, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Paris said. AsiaSat s termination of the contract was effective from April 1, 2008.
Although AsiaSat terminated the contract NTT continues to blatantly violating the international satellite transmission regulations. This is nothing but airwave piracy and the international satellite regulatory bodies should take firm action, a leading EU treaty expert said in Paris.
NTT is the television station of the LTTE, situated in Kilinochchi in North Sri Lanka, and the programmes are uplinked through a segment of a satellite link of AsiaSat obtained through a third party. When the Sri Lanka Authorities informed the nature of NTT to AsiaSat and provided recordings to prove the nature of contents, the AsiaSat immediately terminated the service and informed the rental agencies to discontinue NTT transmissions. However the LTTE continue to telecast its programmes using AsiaSat as the satellite provider. AsiaSat is experiencing technical difficulties to close transmissions as NTT is using a small segment of its uplink facility and it could not be blocked separately.
It is difficult technically to block one transmission. If action is taken to bloch, several television channels will be affected, an intelligence analyst in Colombo explained. That is where we need international regulations against such airwave piracy, he said.
NTT was first telecast through the United States based Intelsal 12 and it was discontinued after the listing of the LTTE as a terrorist organization by the US. Subsequently the LTTE made several attempts to use different satellite providers in Malaysia, Singapore, France, Italy and Israel for radio and television transmissions.
