Lankan News Replies

Sri Lanka`s President had initially decided to appoint Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillaiyan, the de-facto leader of the paramilitary-cum-political party, the TMVP, as the Chief Minister for Eastern Province, informed sources in Colombo said. However, due to strong objection from Muslim ministers supporting M.L.A.M.Hizbulla for the post, there were discussions on the issue at Temple Trees till late Thursday evening. The swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Friday has been postponed, sources said.

As the news of the appointment of Pillayan as CM spread, there were celebrations by the TMVP paramilitary personnel in Batticaloa where fire crackers were lit in a provocative way near the Muslim villages.

Let the minorities have at least the limited freedom and right to elect their Chief Minister.

There must be democracy and the people must be able to elect the members and those members in turn elect the CM as it is done in civilised countries. The President is a Sinhalese who is from the majority and he should not dominate every walk of life.

The EPC is in the minority dominated area and hence let the minorities have at least the limited freedom and right to choose their Chief Minister. Once they elect the Chief Minister, again, they must be able to de-elect if he does not do the job satisfactorily. Sinhalese leaders must and should not control every walk of lives of the minorities which is not democracy but dictatorship.

Sri Lanka has not kept the promise made 2 years back that it would investigate Human Rights abuses and reduce them. So it disqualifies itself from the future membership at least until HR improves.
If Sri Lanka is defeated this year, that will be important not just for the Sri Lankan human rights leaders who, at great personal risk, have called for Sri Lanka's defeat, and for Sri Lankan civil society. Sri Lanka has failed to honour its pledges of upholding human rights standards and cooperating with the UN since joining the council two years ago. Indeed, its human rights record has worsened during that time. The Sri Lankan idea of cooperation with the UN, meanwhile, has been to condemn senior UN officials (including the high commissioner for human rights, Louise Arbour, and the under secretary general for humanitarian affairs, John Holmes) as 'terrorists' or 'terrorist sympathisers.

I think so too.
MR got a big slash fund through the budget and he also has all the kick backs he collected so just buy them off. I that does not work ask gota to put into action one of his pet projects and blame it on LTTE.
