Sri Lanka will dispatch 20 tones of relief assistance to cyclone hit Myanmar, the government announced today.
Addressing a press conference, Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said Myanmar is a close friend of Sri Lanka and urged the public to come to the aid of the people of Myanmar.
`A great devastation had stuck one of our close friends and a neighbouring country in the Asian region. When the LTTE attacked the Dalada Maligawa, the Myanmar Government and its people contributed towards reconstructing the temple and the Ruwanweliseya Chudamanikya was enhanced in quality with the help of the Myanmar Government,` the Minister said.
Cyclone Nargis moved across southern Myanmar on May 2 killing over 100,000 people and leaving nearly 50,000 missing in 600 villages.
The Sri Lankan government also donated USD 25,000 to the Myanmar government as emergency relief. Meanwhile the Three Chapters of the Maha Sangha also have appealed for assistance from the public to help the people of Myanmar.
`Collection of goods and other support from the public can be done during the Vesak period. We can announce to the public at each temple all around the country to come forward and extend their support and also bring donors to their respective temples,` Ven. Madhuluwawe Sobitha Thera said.

We are not in a position to help others as we are in middle of a war. Still we have to help people in Burma.
If the West going to help them definitely there would be a conversion to Christianity
Western help goes with Christianity to Burma. |

Yes you are so correct Myanmar Junta should stop all aide from the Christean west. What is important stop people suffer and perish or stop the Christianity spreading. Good thinking from a Buddhist prospective let people suffer. By the way ruling Junta not so long ago oppressed the demonstration by the Buddhist monks was there outrage from the Buddhist in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan government was about to buy rice from Myanmar only a month ago. Don't blame every thing on Christianity I for one don't consider all Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka as killers just because Somarama assassinated S.W.R.D.Last note If Myanmar waited for aide from Sri Lanka they will be waiting a long time by the time crooked politicos have there share and secondly Sri Lanka has got there begging bowel out from the west so come down from your high moral pedestal think about suffering of people in Myanmar and try and do what you can with every one instead of grandiose about what you cant do. Question why did Sri Lanka bastion of Buddhism accepted aide from West after the tsunami. How short is the memory. When foolish pride get to large to handle one of the first thing to go is memory.

Here we go again Christian and West bashing. Here in Britain, there are very few practising Christians, in fact in a few years there will be more practising Muslims than Christians in Britain! British people are generally very generous and gave a lot of money and goods to Sri Lanka when the tsunami struck. If some evangelising NGO's ride on the back of this generosity then it is the Sri Lankan government's role to stop those NGO's from operating in the country. It should be up to the Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus to pressure the government into stopping such NGO's. Criticising all westerners and christians is not the answer. As a non-proselytising Sri Lankan Christian living in the demonised West, who facilitated many donations from genuinely kind-hearted British people to benefit MOSTLY Buddhists and Hindus, I find such views quite offensive.

Sri Lanka made arrangements to buy 100,000 tons of rice from Myanmar. The cyclone turned the table 180 degress.

We SriLankans have a sense of humanity even though we are a developing nation. The Tiger terrorists are inhuman.
