Are you referrring to the backlash slankan army and police unleashed on JVP in 1972 and 1988. Those days, body parts of sinhala buddhist youth were on tyres and hagging on lamp posts. Heads without bodies were on round abouts.

It was the work of Amry and Police. UNP or Ranil had nothing to do with what went wrong. JVP got what they asked for. But the amry was ruthless and it is even today. They fear only LTTe and VP. |

IN SL only sinhalese showed as a race they can b barberic enough to do what they did in 83 riots.

Sorry for a late reply.
One thing that stands out here is that in the UK, where we have a notion of free speech, such rights are encouraged in universities especially.
MR would have been given the same respect for his speech as anyone else, in such an environment. However, he failed to realise, that Oxford is the home of a highly intellectual, deeply debating society, that is trained to research, understand, and comment, based on history and debate arguments placed.
As such, the fact that he didn't allow a call for questions afterwards, will not 'silence' the debate, but would cause the debate to spiral outside the talk. And it is happening. My colleagues in Oxford are already talking about forums and discussion going on, both on-line and ad-hoc regarding MR's Speech. The discussions are not very positive on the speech, as the students research and debate on what was said.
Considering Oxford is the home of future politicians, and other important folk, It may indeed backfire. |
