Andyprem,
The systems in Australia are far more discriminatory and arbitrary, for instance because too many 'asian - oriental' students were getting in to medical school they introduced an interview that superseded the marks.
I too was highly critical of this before I realised that second generation migrants were 'telling' older Australians what to do - through this merit basis. In one instance an accountant whom I took to court for unlawful racial discrimination - was in reality criticising the flexible working hour system used by some mothers. When I asked her she said 'Why can't they get up early and come to work as I do?' Where the merit system is actually not working we need to culturally merge with majority in any environment to successfully provide service.
The University of NSW Medical College did go through this 'interview' system under the leadership of Professor Bruce Dowton - the best boss I worked with. I contributed to this system through the avenues available to me and this included regular feedback as a migrant worker and parent. It took that challenge and court case for me to realise the importance of using the subjective majority system in areas where merit is not actively usable. Hence my inclusion with the Tigers. This would not have happened if Sri Lankan Public Service had had a strong merit based system. Then that is catch 22.
I dont really think we need any more self promotion Sri Lanka.
Oh No. We need more and more of it if we are not to be discarded by the west.
love
