Grounded budget carrier, Mihin Lanka, is at the final stages of bringing in two Airbus A-320 aircraft to Sri Lanka in order to resume flights again.
The government-owned airline has currently suspended flights due to the unavailability of aircraft.
However, both the aircraft currently tarmacked in Chateaurouk-Deols (LFLX) France are each over the 15-year threshold for passenger jet aircraft imposed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
It is learnt that Mihin is negotiating for these aircraft in the full knowledge that they are flouting the Civil Aviation Authority guidelines.
The aircraft have Manufacturer s Serial Numbers (MSNs) 87 and 88. MSN 87 is an A320-212, which first flew on August 8, 1989 and was operated by Royal Jordanian and sold on December 21, 2006 to LTE Airlines of Spain, with the registration EC-KID.
Aircraft MSN 88 is an A320-211, which first flew on November 21, 1989, and was also owned by Royal Jordanian and sold on the same day to LTE. It carries the registration EC-KFM. Both have been returned to the leaser in France.
ICAO, via its COSCAP arm, is committed to sustaining safety in the skies. COSCAP, for example, will play a dynamic role in ensuring the continued airworthiness of aircraft flying in this region. The former Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority, H.M.C. Nimalsiri, is in charge of the COSCAP regional office and is expected to be watching Mihin s progress, especially in terms of continued airworthiness of its aircraft, sources said.
The 15-year rule is very specific and is in place to ensure that the local director general of civil aviation in any member country can keep an eye on the maintenance of aircraft, which is critical to ensure the safety of passengers, craft and the public at large as well as the perceived safety image of the country.
Airline sources said that Sri Lanka faces the risk of removal from membership of ICAO, which in turn will mean the wholesale withdrawal of airlines entering Sri Lanka s airspace.
Sri Lanka s aviation industry has an enviable safety record, but continuous Mihin Lanka antics are risking this too, sources added.

Knowing this who will fly Mihin?
It could be the last time you fly. Should be their catch phrase.ha ha ha
This is the type of endorsement a new air line needs to develop its business........
It is just a front for MR and family to clean out the National coffers. But let the Singlecellese be happy with their wonderful Presidents work and exploits. It takes a bigger dummy to understand a dummy.

Right you are, WRH. I would give it to the Air Tigers to replace their tin cans!
More seriously, it-8217 s clear that this Mihin Air story was a complete nonsense right from the beginning and even puts Sri Lankan Airways into more difficulties. No wonder why a significant number of air personnel are looking for jobs outside Sri Lanka.
