Three patients died at the Ratnapura Hospital, after its nursing staff, numbering around 500, went on strike from Wednesday afternoon over the transfer of a male nurse to the Kegalle General Hospital following an incident involving a lady doctor. There was a shortage of drugs and equipment yesterday as they had been locked in cabinets and nurses had the keys.
An angry Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva instructed the Health Services Director General Dr. Ajith Mendis to hold an immediate inquiry into the deaths and submit a report to him which he said he intended to forward to the Attorney General for legal action.

The Minister said it was time to put an end to what her termed illegal strikes that crippled health services causing tremendous inconvenience to patients.

The Health Ministry had transferred a male nurse for using abusive language on a lady doctor. But, according to Hospital sources, the male nurse concerned, who despite being transferred to the Kegalle Hospital, was seen hovering around the Ratnapura Hospital yesterday.

Yesterday stocks of essential drugs were sent to Ratnapura from Colombo and attendants and doctors performed the duties of the nurses. Hospital Director Dr. Ananda Jayalal said there had been only two deaths on Wednesday, one a still birth while the other of a woman who may have died for want of drugs.

Public Service United Nurses Union President Ven. Murutettuwe Ananda Thera said he was contemplating dismissing the striking nurses at Ratnapura from the union membership.

The strike by nurses was still on as this edition went to press.

Organized thugs and mobs can settle the matter. Assault these Docas and fighting girls at their homes. Set fire to their properties till they return back to work.

Long time back I watched in a movie that Russian Govt. hanged a striker in front of his comrades.
Bring this to reality and start with Doctors and Nurses .

Sometime ago when the doctors of the Kurunegala hospital struck work, petrol stations in the area refused fuel to doctors' vehicles which were easily identifiable with their 'blue cross' car passes on the windscreens. Some of their cars were even attacked by thugs forcing the doctors to remove the car passes from the windscreens!

When doctors and nurses resort to 'high handed' activity jeopardising the lives of the sick, any one unleashing the worst possible form of attack on them will not be ridiculed and looked down by anyone in society.

Those who work in the heath field have a responsibility to care for the welfare of their patients and the government has to pay a decent salary to them. Those in charge of this government have wrong priorities putting the war in front and everything else including heath and education back. Youths are sacrificed to fulfill their egos while the masses are forced to fasten their belts with no light in sight.

Modern Nighingales.

Did they hold an oil lamp or Kerosene lamp when they took oaths of service?

Interesting proposal!
Yes, we can refuse to give fuel, food items at Gargills and Arpico, Supply of Gas, cut the water supply, disconnect the electricity, etc.

Luckily not. Otherwise, they will use it to set fire on patients' bed!
