MADURAI: THE 30-year-old ethnic war in the north and east of Sri Lanka (claimed as Tamil Eelam by the militants) has caused many fall outs.
One of them is the problem of finding bridegrooms for young girls and not so young women in that part of the island nation. The May issue of Eela Suthanthiran , a monthly journal published in Chennai, highlights the problem of unmarried women in Eelam in an article titled, 'the expectation of marriage and maternity by women in Eelam . The war resulted in a diaspora of a large number of Tamils from Sri Lanka, especially after the repeated ethnic pogroms in that country which reached its climax in 1983.
Thousands of youths fled to avoid conscriptions by the militant organisations. Some youths joined the militant organisations and were killed either by the armed forces or by Tamils belonging to rival outfits.
All these led to a sharp decline in the number of men, leave alone eligible bachelors to get married to their women. There were many women who had long passed the age of 30, but still remained as spinsters. This, the journal says, has put the remaining young men at a premium. They demand lakhs of rupees as dowry, plus houses to enter into wedlock with waiting women. The men agree to tie the knot to the highest bidder. Priorities are, beauty, very fair, slim, good education and employed, in that order. Another impact of the situation is the fall in the birthrate, as most of the women are being rendered sterile.
