Sri Lanka`s leading telecommunications company Dialog Telekom in partnership with IWS Geographical Information Systems (Pvt) Ltd. has launched the country`s first ever Mobile Navigation System.
Dialog SatNav which is a fully featured GPS based mobile navigation system incorporates a digital street directory of Colombo which includes class A, B, C and D roads in the Colombo Municipal Council area and suburbs as well as class A and B roads across Sri Lanka. The Dialog SatNav device enables users to navigate Sri Lanka s road network using satellite positioning. The digital maps which form the heart of the navigation system support a range of advanced features such as the identification of places of interest and optimum routes .
Dialog SatNav supports an advanced user interface complete with audio and visual prompts which serve to guide the user to a predefined destination. Dialog SatNav also enables customers to view maps in 2D (Dimension) or 3D (Dimension) format and to pre-configure frequently used routes.

| Can the maps (if issued on a SD card or whatever) be used on a normal Sat Nav device for vehicles? |

Everybody crawls before they can get up, walk and run!
Dialog mobile phone coverage about 10-15 years ago wasn't there beyond the Dehiwela bridge going south from Colombo. At that time Celltel was ruling the roost with the widest coverage and was the No.1 network.
Today Dialog is the No.1 mobile phone network in Sri Lanka with the widest coverage and Celltel is not even there in the market.

| This is a good move. But GPS are very expensive in L. How many people can afford to use GPS in their vehivles in SL?. I think we must encourage importers to provide GPS to a reasonable price. |

GPS is good for tourists if they rent cars which is not the case. Good for expatriates coming to Sri Lanka for vacation.

How good this is for the LTTE? just put on the destination on the navigator. once get to the destination, blow off them selves....
navigation systems are very useful to any country.
but this isn't the best time for SL to have such system. |

We are crawling since our birth up to date.
Our locomotive system is still crawling.
Our power and energy system is still crawling.
Our economy is still crawling.
Our MPs and ministers are also crawling.

How many people in SL are going to be able to afford this? And the way you people are driving, looking at the TomTom, or whatever it is, this is just plain suicide. There is no good map of SL and Google Earth is a drama too, maybe your governement doesn't realy like people watching. But like I said mobile navigation in this stage in Colombo is like having a deathwish.

True!
BUT...
Dialog as a whole is not crawling, eventhough the Dialog Sat Nav system is still at the crawling stage! It wouldn't be long before Sri Lanka has a Sat Nav system that could be one of the best in the world, thanks to Dialog.
