The Investigations Unit of the Piliyandala police have taken into custody the main suspect in last Friday s bus bombing at Piliyandala, together with two accomplices. One of the accomplices is a Sinhala youth and the other a Tamil youth from Nuwara Eliya.
Piliyandala Police said the main suspect was a resident of Kilinochchi. He had told police that he detonated the bomb using a remote control device. Investigations had revealed that the suspect had been living in the house of the Sinhala youth at Deltara, Piliyandala for three weeks.
Police said the youth from Nuwara Eliya had been employed in Piliyandala.
Piliyandala bomb blast:
He had befriended the Deltara youth in whose house the main suspect had been staying. The unemployed Sinhala youth had been paid Rs. 50,000 in instalments for keeping the bomb. Police said the bomb had been brought to assassinate a VIP and kept in an abandoned vehicle by the roadside. When they failed to use on the VIP, they had decided to explode in any suitable place. Accordingly, on April 25th, the Sinhala youth and the two Tamil youths had gone to the Piliyandala bus stand with the bomb and placed it inside a Kahapola bound bus.
When the bus was full and about to leave, the main suspect had activated the bomb. After the explosion, the three suspects had thrown the remote control device into a bush and gone back to Deltara. Police had managed to locate the remote control.
Investigations had revealed that two groups had come to Colombo to carry out bomb attacks. The Jeyaraj Fernandopulle killing and the Piliyandala carnage had been carried out by one of the groups.
A police spokesman said an order would be obtained to detain the suspects for further questioning.
