Ex-top brass barred from Army camps

Two former top Army officers - Major General Janaka Perera and Colonel Jayavi Fernando have been barred by Army Headquarters from entering all Army camps in the country, with immediate effect citing security reasons. A top defence official told the Daily Mirror yesterday that the main reason for the ban follows the officials making statements through certain media undermining recent military victories.
A special circular has been issued by Army Headquarters to military camps and bases countrywide instructing them not to allow the two officers to enter their premises, the official said.

He also said that the circular also instructed Army officers of other ranks not to have any links with the officers concerned.

According to the circular, the said officers had made certain comments through the media undermining the recent military victories while praising the LTTE`s `cowardly` activities.

With these comments these officers were trying to demoralize the troops who are sacrificing their lives for the sake of the motherland, it said

It also stated that in order to gain petty political advantage these officers were trying to send a negative image to the public as well as to the parents of those men who are fighting in the battle field.Major General Perera was the former Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and following his retirement he was made Sri Lanka`s High Commissioner to Australia and later Sri Lanka`s Ambassador to Indonesia.

This is probably a symptom of factional infighting within SLA.
