Sri Lankans pray for miracles as civilians pay high price
Sunday, 27 April 2008 - 9:25 PM SL Time

KAHAPOLA, Sri Lanka (AFP) - With both hands clasped, Pat Amarasinghe prays before a Buddha statue seeking divine help for the impossible -- to bring back her son, Ishara, who died in a bus blast in Sri Lanka.

Ishara and his fiancee, Geethika, both 24, were among 26 people killed when suspected Tamil Tiger rebels set off a powerful bomb inside a packed state-run bus on Friday. Another 60 passengers escaped with injuries.

The red bus travelling from the outskirts of Colombo to Kahapola was carrying more than 100 office workers and school children, returning from private tuition.

Tamil Tiger light aircraft bombed a Sri Lankan military position in the north of the island early on Sunday in the rebels` first air raid in nearly six months.

The toll makes Wednesday`s clash the bloodiest in recent years and saw the authorities extend `unofficial` press censorship to hospitals and funeral parlours, a media rights group said.

The death toll from the sources were far higher than official defence ministry casualty figures, who have long been accused of massaging the statistics.

Festina lente!!
Saturday, 26 April 2008 - 4:13 AM SL Time

The much lionized Tigers have lost their first line of defence at Muhamalai despite their bragging that it was impregnable. The army has consolidated its power in a newly gained area encompassing approximately half a kilometre ahead of its FDL from Kilali to Kadolana, thus rendering the LTTE positions in the peninsula and beyond extremely vulnerable.

The Tiger defences that fell, it should be noted, had been fortified over several years to prevent a southward thrust by the Jaffna based troops. At a time the outfit is under tremendous pressure on the Mannar and the Weli Oya fronts, it is possible that it will go all out to move northwards from Muhamalai, where it has a heavy presence. The army may have sought to pre-empt such an attack on Wednesday by capturing the LTTE`s FDL. But, the question is whether the army has learnt its lessons from the heavy losses it had suffered in battles at Muhamailai in 2006 and last year.

The Red and Blue hypocrisy
Friday, 25 April 2008 - 9:14 AM SL Time
Rathu Sahodarayas, as is well known, are masters of slinging mud at others. They have given many a political leader a right royal mud bath. The JVP may have inherited that trait from its founder Rohana Wijeweera, whose forte was vicious iconoclastic calumny, with which he apparently sought to overcome some personality problems. His successors seem to have overtaken him posthumously in that respect, if their sordid conduct is any indication.

Sri Lanka Sports Ministry to investigate N Eliya racing tragedy
Saturday, 26 April 2008 - 4:12 AM SL Time

`This person (de Costa) distorts the facts and spreads utterly false stories saying that we have made an organisational blunder in conducting the N Eliya race. But the fact is that Mr. de Costa is acting on his personal egoism and making use of this sorrowful human loss for his own benefit. That is really pathetic,` said present SLMC acting president Mahesh Gammampila yesterday.

`We met the Sports Minister (Lokuge) last Thursday (24) and showed him all the documents to prove that we held the races in a proper manner. This is one of the oldest motor races in the country. Even the main accuser here (de Costa) too was part of the organising committee of the N Eliya car races for some years. We have collaborated with the motorcycling mother association before these races. I think the minister was very much convinced that we were not at fault as the organisers of the event. But he needed some time to investigate more into the issue and convey his final verdict,` Gammampila further explained.

Kingswood stuns Royal 13-7
Friday, 25 April 2008 - 9:16 AM SL Time
Kingswood College upset all calculations when they beat Royal 13-7 (one goal, two penalties) to a goal in their Singer Shield A Division rugby tournament game at the Bogambara Stadium yesterday. At half time Kingswood led 7-0.

The Kingswoodians owe their victory to the kicking boots of scrum half Roshan Weeraratne who contributed eight points in addition to some excellent play in the loose by making some daring moves.

His moves, however, lacked support.

Skipper Gayan Ratnage too had a good game and so did their full back M.C. Sansoni.
