Afterall trend is to re-newable energy not the fossil energy
That's what I kept telling these people over two years,
If we can invest the same amount of money spent for the oil exploration and mining for setting up wind turbines and solar villages, it would have been much more profitable in the long run.
Even if the government get oil and start refining, they are not gonna give it cheaper than what it is now. The industry needs a lot of workforce to maintain the energy needs and the other maintenance.
But I agree, oil is a key factor for an economy, and there are millions of vehicles in the country, and counting - They need fuel.
As for electricity cost, the renewable energy is the best option, we get plenty of sunlight throughout the year, we get enough wind blown to the country through the coastline,...
I saw the energy minister has mentioned that setting up such things are not profitable, I don't know if it's not profitable for him or for the country.
It takes only start up cost as a huge sum, after that only maintenance and a few workforce to keep things up and running, may be we will be able to manufacture solar cells in Sri Lanka for our needs..

There is oil in Sri Lanka.
In 1992 I tried to establish a deal with Petroleum Corp and failed due to security situation. A Sri Lankan who is a geologist working for one of the biggest oil drilling companies provided the map of oil deposits. The shape of the deposit resemble a tear drop, with the bottom potion is in Sri Lankan waters. India is aware of this and they want to use vertical drills to extract our oil. There was a Canadian investor who was willing to fund the exploration, but wanted guarantee from government for their security. Back Sea Tigers were very active at that time and Govt was unable to give the guarantee. |

Piyal,
Ya..many years back though.
Name a few, I might know,... Most of my friends were in 1994 - 1998, but there are some senior and junior guys I knew,...
I had a friend over there,(he was ML's friend too) nick name, Kaputa.... and I used to hang out with them pretty often, so I know some of the guys and gals.
I remember it was located at Mt. Lavinia at that time,.. We used to play Cricket at the beach most of the week ends,...

AnuD,
One Sri Lankan working in the Petroleum industry told me, almost everywhere on Earth Petroleum is available if you dig deep enough.
The question is cost of drilling in order to pump it out.
Will you now come back...we need effecient diggers! |

Crude oil product by 2010??
That means in 1.5 years. I don't think so.
This project is not yet awarded. MR may be planning to finish it off before finish his 1st term to take the credit.
My take is if it is weel run project it would take about 2-3 years. But in SriLankan non of the major porojects run in time. Norochcholai awarded to China company 2 years ago. Still it is a long way to go.
On other hand I hope oil will not be ready untill the war is over.
Else these stupid politicians will use all the money to buy bombs and guns, rather invetsting it in economy. |

Piyal,
Just keep on telling same thing does not make it right.
Renewable energy such as solar, wind technically not viable for bigger capacities like 500MW & above.
Please find some materials to read about this or talk to some electrical engineers to understand it.
Sri Lanka lost about 1.5 decades by listening to these renewable energy fancy stories. and Sri Lanka is paying the price for it now. |
