Life in Jaffna: The seen and the unseen, the told and the untold
Sunday, 13 April 2008 - 1:13 PM SL Time
Sunday Times

When we visited Jaffna town last week, it appeared to be buzzing with life. People were attending to their New Year shopping while Tamil music blared in the background--probably from the shops that were being decorated for the festivities. Buses were plying and young girls were cycling to temple even as dusk fell.

These are scenes that were rarely seen in the recent past. However, people still live in fear, although the government claims that troops have successfully eliminated rebels operating in the town area, ushering a sense of freedom for the people.

The battle of katussas II
Thursday, 10 April 2008 - 4:54 AM SL Time
Tuesday s big-bang in the JVP was a foregone conclusion. Ink on our editorial comment, The Battle of Katussas, predicting a disastrous split in the JVP, was still wet when Wimal Weerawansa told Parliament on Tuesday that his party had stabbed him in the back. A group of JVP MPs pledged solidarity with him later in the day. The JVP s split is far worse than that in the UNP, which has so far lost 25 MPs to the government in that the JVP is an ideologically driven, centrally controlled and regimented outfit which derives strength mainly from its discipline. Rathu Sahodarayas disaster could, therefore, be equated only to the split in the LTTE, which resulted in Karuna s breakaway.

A question of survival
Wednesday, 9 April 2008 - 11:39 AM SL Time
The police investigating the assassination of Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle have made a startling revelation, which might make even Scotland Yard envy the ability of our investigators. We, as a nation, must be proud of our police! If Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were alive today, he would immortalise our police top brass in his fiction. What have our investigators done to qualify for such accolades? They have, after accomplishing the gruelling task of conducting the preliminary investigations, found that the Tigers succeeded in taking their target with ease on Sunday as there hadn t been adequate security at the sports event! Bravo! They must be congratulated on having painstakingly investigated and found something that even a tyke would have told them!

The battle of Katussas (chameleons)
Tuesday, 8 April 2008 - 12:13 PM SL Time
Rathu Sahodarayas downhill journey has begun. Their post Wijeweera performance reached its zenith at the 2004 General Election, where 36 of its 37 candidates fielded from the UPFA list were returned and two of their National List seats donated to the SLFP. Then it plateaued and now it is on the decline or, as they say, the JVP is down the pallang. The rise and fall of the JVP is a cyclical phenomenon. Its fall is characterised by the gravitation of the top-rung leaders to two centres of power, one representing the orthodox revolutionary core and the other dynamic rational interface of the party. This process is as old as the origin of the JVP, which began with acrimonious dissension among founder members, some of whom, including G. I. D. Dharmasekera, left in a huff in the late 1960s.

Jayawardene blames batting failure for Windies Lankan defeat
Tuesday, 8 April 2008 - 12:15 PM SL Time
Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene said his side`s top order batting failure in the second innings had been to blame for Sunday`s loss to West Indies, which tied the two-test series 1-1.

West Indies reached the victory target of 253 with the loss of just four wickets but Jayawardene said it was Saturday`s top order collapse when they slumped to 99 for six lost them the match, despite a century from Thilan Samaraweera.

`After the first two days, we knew it was going to be a tough battle, it was pretty even. Then we lost four wickets pretty early in the second innings and that was probably where we went wrong,` said Jayawardene.
