Sri Lanka - ICRC oversees safe passage of nearly 25,000 civilians
Friday, 28 March 2008 - 8:52 PM SL Time

Additional security measures introduced by the Sri Lankan government at the Medawachchiya checkpoint in Anuradhapura and the Omanthai crossing point in Vavuniya slowed down the movement of civilians between areas controlled by the government and those held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), and left many commercial vehicles stranded. The ICRC responded to a government request to help clear the tailback of trucks waiting to cross at Omanthai by extending its presence there from five to six days a week. The authorities also deployed extra personnel at Omanthai to speed up the process.

Sri Lanka campaign to discourage suicide bombers
Friday, 28 March 2008 - 4:39 AM SL Time
Reuters
Sri Lanka has launched a mystery poster campaign inviting would-be Tamil Tiger suicide bombers to phone a government helpline in exchange for 10 million rupees ($92,000) and a new life overseas.

`Why should you die with a scattered body?` the red-and-yellow posters, placed in Tamil-dominated areas of the capital, Colombo, asked readers contemplating becoming members of what the rebels call elite `Black Tiger` suicide squads.

`You also were born to live. Why should you carry bombs?` the posters said alongside a fuzzy black-and-white photograph of a suicide bomber`s severed head.

India will never allow separate State in Lanka: Prime Minister
Wednesday, 26 March 2008 - 7:45 PM SL Time
India will never allow a separate independent state for Tamils to be carved out from Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka said here yesterday.

`It should be borne in mind that India will never allow a separate independent state for Tamils in Sri Lanka because such a development will have a disastrous effect in India,` Wickramanayaka, who is the first Sri Lankan Prime Minister to visit Israel, told a gathering.

`India has always been committed to Sri Lanka`s territorial integrity,` he added. The Sri Lankan Prime Minister, who is on a four-day visit, claimed that LTTE leader V Prabhakaran wanted to create a Tamil state by `including certain parts of India as well`. Seeking international support in the fight against LTTE, Wickramanayaka said it has become a cross border menace which requires global coordination.

Shameful political sham
Friday, 28 March 2008 - 3:31 AM SL Time
`If you tell the truth,` said Mark Twain, `you don t have to remember anything.` Those who utter untruth, fibs, falsehoods, half-truths and lies, have to have a great deal of grey matter to remember them and repeat them consistently later on. The trouble is more serious when a collective of persons resorts to lying, for each and every member of the group has to be careful enough to avoid lapsus calami and lapsus linguae.

And there arise situations in life when people have to tell the truth even at the risk of contradicting themselves and having egg on their face. How the present government landed itself in the soup over the Muttur killings is a case in point.

A question of belling the cat
Thursday, 27 March 2008 - 4:13 AM SL Time
This is an era of activism. Radicalisation of institutions is the order of the day! The judiciary is leading the way by taking on the legislature and the executive and its campaign has had a bandwagon effect. Several other institutions are apparently following suit with the noble goal of turning this little country into a five star democracy.
Now, we hear that the Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) is planning to move a resolution calling upon all political parties to impeach President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The proposal to be moved at a Special General Meeting of the OPA on April 08, 2008 reads: The OPA calls upon all political parties represented in Parliament to bring in a motion to impeach the President and ask them to put aside sectarian party interests and instead act to uphold the Constitution that they have sworn to uphold and follow.

It s school admissions stupid!
Tuesday, 25 March 2008 - 7:42 PM SL Time
The national policy on Grade One school admissions is in the news again. It is being presented to the Cabinet at long last, we are told. After it passes muster at that level, it will be presented to Parliament. But, from what is reported in the press about the new policy, one cannot be sanguine about a lasting solution being found. A strategy to tackle the problem has to go way beyond juggling with percentages and quotas, however necessary they may be as short term measures to retard the country s slide towards a disaster in education.
