Ani,
Most historians believe Vijaya came to the island about 150 years after Buddha. There is no relation with Budd ism and Vijaya.
Buddhism came to the island under king Dewanampiyathissa.

And,
Dr. Lankamithra Fernando says that the Sinhalese believe that they are the 'Chosen' people and were entrusted with the guardianship of Buddhism.

there is no such claim by Sinhalese. But, Buddhism protected in SL, when Hinduism came to its old position in India. Anyway, you can discuss these with Mucha/Anud/ or Udawatta...

Mucha, please write few lines if you can.

Article written by Ranil or one of his supporters ? . lol

I am also hoping for peace . but I dont think there is a chance for peace with the LTTE . That is not an organization that can handle or wants peace . That is why I think what Mahinda is doing is the only thing possible . I also this this is a strategy which has the tacit approval of India . Look at the Hindu article

But, Buddhism protected in SL

Sansare
I totally respect Lord Buddha and I respect Christ and Mohammed too.

My question is: Buddhism survived 400 years of European rule, as did Hinduism. Why do you need state protection? The religion should live in peoples' minds, not enforced.

One of my friends witnessed in a Kandy CTB bus: An old Tamil Catholic priest was seated in the first row, reserved for 'clergy'. A young Buddhist monk got on the bus, went to 'that' seat and claimed his 'rightful' place. The Catholic priest got up and travelled standing for the rest of the journey.

I know all the hawks will tear me apart for writing this but I have to write what comes to my mind, with due respect to the sensitivities of our friends. In my mind I think religion should never be allowed to come into public life. All religions should be equal. I would like to know your thoughts:))
