A conspiracy to take the country to a military rule, says Chandrika

(Lanka-e-News, 2008 March 29, 8.00PM) Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumarathunga says that there is a conspiracy to take the country to a military rule.

She mentioned this in an interview of a weekend newspaper.

She says that the current government is her creation. `This is a government I made through my party. I have severe criticism on this government. I still love SLFP. Therefore, I do not like to criticize it in public. But I see a danger of the country is being taken to a military rule.`

`I will not let it happen through the party my parents safeguarded democracy,` said Ms. Kumarathunga.

Stating that she was unwilling to return to politics and as Ms. Sunethra Bandaranaike also held the same view, a name would be proposed to the Aththanagalla electorate central party organization.

Ms. Bandaranaike stated that she made three mistakes in her political career. The first is coming to an agreement with the JVP. Second is dissolving the Ranil Wickramasinghe government. She further said that the third error would be revealed in the future.

She says that she is still in her all time view of that the two major parties should join to build the country.

Stating that the President Mahinda Rajapakse was made a national leader by herself, she criticized the current President through past incidents.

JHU storms Kingswood College

The principal of Kingswood College, Kandy has been threatened by the Jathika Hela Urumaya for allowing the school premises to be used for a prayer service organized by the National Christian Association.

The Department of Education had given prior permission for the event on March 15th, principal of the school Ranjith Chandrasekara said.

He has complained to the Kandy Police that after the prayer service, a group led by the JHU s Kandy District leader Thushara Swarnatilake had stormed the school and threatened him before staging a protest in front of the school.

Chandrasekara said that he had charged Rs. 6,500 for providing the venue for the prayer service that was conducted to invoke blessings on the country, its leaders and the people.

A JHU group led by Kandy district MP Udawatte Nanda and Liyanwila Sasanaratana Theras had met the principal and claimed that 500 Tamil Tigers from Kilinochchi had attended the prayer service.

After the principal informed them that the school had no connection with the event, the group had damaged the school hall and staged a protest outside the premises.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake had also attended the event which attracted pre-event publicity through a poster campaign in the Kandy town, Swarnatilake said.

Had the JHU had any issue with the event, it should have took it up with the police or me, he added.

Instead, it had acted in a manner that incites religious and communal feelings among the public.

When contacted, the UNP General Secretary said he briefly attended the event for around 10 minutes as it was aimed at invoking blessings on the country.

Attanayake also said that he had also come to know about the disturbance, and extended his fullest support to the school principal in a telephone conversation.

According to JHU s Thushara Swarnatilake, he had only questioned the school principal as to whether a group from Kilinochchi had participated in the prayer, and then staged a protest against it with the people of Kandy.

Lal Kantha speaks up of the JVP politician who is caught in Mahinda's 'glue baby'

(Lanka-e-News, 2008 March 29, 8.00AM) 'Those who do not bow the majority consent should not stay in the JVP politburo. Decisions should be reached through majority consent and not through individual stands. A conspiracy is underway to divide the party and I would name the persons concerned soon.'

This is a statement made by MP K.D. Lal Kantha, JVP trade union leader and the person used to express the party internal stances. He made this statement addressing the JVP party branch conference held in Raththota, Mathale on March 27.

Lal Kantha alluded JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa without mentioning his name. He emphasized, 'President Mahinda Rajapakse is in the habit of catching the weak politicians through 'glue babies' (Koholla babala). There are people caught in this within JVP too and they make various statements.'

Lal Kantha's hard stance to reveal the party internal conflict is a direct response to the public statements made by Wimal Weerawansa on disarming Pillaiyan Group.

JVP Secretary Tilvin Silva stated in several public meetings as well as at the discussion held by the Election Commissioner with the political party secretaries on the Provincial Council election of the Eastern Province that the Pillaiyan Group must be disarmed.

MP K.D. Lal Kantha said to Lankadeepa newspaper on March 27, that the government was in an erroneous political process of consolidating Pillaiyan's military power in the Eastern Province and registered a strong protest to it.

Meanwhile, MP Wimal Weerawansa said that the brains should be examined of those who said Pillaiyan Group should be disarmed. As the General Secretary of the Patriot National Movement Weerawansa said in Colombo on March 26 that the criticism on Pillaiyan Groups armaments should be focused to drag them to the democratic process and not to betray them to the LTTE. He said that he had problems over the benevolence of those who needed to disarm Pillaiyan.

Meanwhile, the sacked JVP politburo member MP Nandana Gunathilaka appreciated Weerawansa's politics in an article written to a weekend newspaper.

She had the golden opportunity to solve this stupid war.

Ranil and Hakeem already agreed to an alliance

(Lanka-e-News, 2008 March 29, 9.40PM) Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) is to finalize the list of candidates for the Eastern Provincial Council tomorrow (30) and to go for a discussion with the UNP again on Monday.

SLMC Secretary Hassan Ali said that the party original stance to contest to the Eastern Provincial Council alone has not changed although the SLMC would talk again with the UNP.

A senior leader of the SLMC said to Lanka-e-News that leaders of both parties, Mr. Hakeem and Mr. Wickramasinghe had already agreed to an alliance and the number of candidates that would be filed from each party would be discussed on Monday.

He further said that although Mr. Hisbulla was the SLMC leader of the Eastern Province, he would not be named as the Chief Minister candidate in any circumstance.
