More than the beautification, this is being done for security reasons. The Sri Lanka -Japan friendship road also has undergone a similar cleaning up and beautifiction in the name of security!

The only beauty in Colombo is what we inherited from the British. Kandy was a beautiful city under the Kandyan kings, but Colombo did not have a king.

I think, better the GoSL to start 'rescue of the poor program'......

there will be billions spent on those beautfications..... forget about the percentage going into pockets.......what if those billions are used in the first place to give the poor a better life, boosting the economy and bring down the CoL....
then we can think about these beautifications....

Kotte was the capital when the Portuguese came, kings like mayadunne and parakrambahu VI ruled there. capital shifted to kandy after Portuguese took control of the coast.

Very glorious decision.
The next step would be cleaning of parliamentary premises and surrounding areas.
Then goes to the next step of cleaning the lake around the parliament.
The next step is beautification of areas around the parliamentarians residences.
What else!
Thanks Ranawaka.
