SLA forces civilians to cleanup checkposts, military bases

More than 600 men of all ages were rounded up Sunday morning 7:00a.m. by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers in Varanai, Kudamiyan and suburbs in Thenamaraadchi and taken away in military vehicles to be deployed for clean up and restoration work within and outside the military bases, sources in Jaffna said. The civilians were forced to work the whole day at gun point in and around the army bases, check posts and shrub lands along Kodikamam Point Pedro road, officials from Thenmaraadchi District Secretariat confirmed.
The civilians, most of whom are casual labourers and farmers were not released even after 4:00p.m., according to local families.
The men were forced to clean a five-mile stretch along Kodikaamam Point Pedro road from Mu`l`li up to Chuddipuram in Vara`ni, where several mini camps and check points are located, in the presence of large number of armed soldiers.
Recent complaints made to higher officials of SLA for using civilians in forced labor have gone unheeded, local residents said.
The area located on the far end of Thenmaraadchi Forward Defence Lines (FDL) is under the control of SLA, and most civilians residing along the main road have already abandoned their homes which are at present used by SLA as mini camps.
Already Kodikaamam Point Pedro road has been closed for traffic as well as for pedestrian use citing security concerns for the 52nd Division of SLA located in the area occupying a large area including part of this main route.
After the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2002, the road was opened for public use by court order.
However, with recent commencement of clashes between SLA and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the road has once again been closed and the people are forced to use an alternate sandy gravel road.
Due to the recent torrential rains the road has turned muddy with several puddles of water, causing great inconvenience.
SLA though aware of the hardships of the public, has refused to open the normal road.

This news makes number of IFs.
If, SLA forced people to work at gun point, its totally unacceptable, and also a serious human right violation.
If, people worked under some volunteer work (sramadanaya), this is a good work organized by SLA.
IF, SLA asked or forced OVER 600 men to cleanup check posts, military bases, its a fool act, since LTTE infiltration may give info about those SLA positions to LTTE.
Generally, people must condemned this act of SLA, since the people in Jaffna are living under sever stress. BUT, its worth to wait till what the GOSL news talks about the matter. Anyway, the news is contradicting to SLA's own claim that its doing hard to promote harmony between public and SLA in Jaffna.

Guys,
This is a plea to diaspora. I have never criticised tamilnet even though I could point out few absolutely wrong articles and news items that they published. I understand their business model and I have let them run with it. I have never ever called Tamilnet 'punnakku' or any deragatory term!
Please.... this new item is wrong. There is no truth in it and there is no way 100s of people can be accommodated in a camp. This is a very pathetic form of journalism. Not only it is wrong it is an insult to the readers' intelligence.
Please guys, dont take this new item seriously. This is taking journalism to a new low and is published probably with the intention of fuelling nationalistic feelings.
Whoever publishes this sort of garbage (whether it is Tamilnet or Defense.lk) that is wrong and despicable. I have had very good arguements with many friends here from the tamil community. I plead you not to take this particular news item seriously. This is wrong and absolute rubbish. this is an insult to your own intelligence as much as to mine.
You can bash me for this post if you want, but before that please take a look at my previous posts and see if i have even criticised any journalist or a news item. Check if I have ever accused any newswire as punnakku. If I condemn a news article ithis is the first time and hopefully the last time. but this is with good reasons
many thanks.

Human Right violation is a very good point, I am glad at least you realise its a human right violation!
The key point here is the Rajapakse gvt and its henchmen are commiting series of HR violations, and the international community specially has become accutely aware of the violations recently. The gvt has taken a path of no return, because to change this culture of HR violations, it is not possible. This barbaric behaviour is a sign of desperation it looks like a a defeated cowardice army rather than a proud national force.
Its a total farce!! |
