A National Seminar on Solid Waste Management was held recently at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute Colombo. This seminar was jointly organised by National Solid Waste Management Support Centre of the Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The objective of the seminar was to introduce the activities of the JICA Capacity Upgrading Project for the National Solid Waste Management Support Centre (NSWMSC), to the stake holders of solid waste management (SWM) at national, provincial and local level.

Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils, Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, said that SWM is a burning issue in Sri Lanka and it would be another serious problem if appropriate action is not taken now.

T Ueshima, Resident Representative of JICA, pointed out that simple low cost technology of SWM suitable for Sri Lanka can be identified instead of capital intensive and sophisticated technology and JICA could support to implement this type of technology of SWM for local authorities.

The seminar had three major presentations Aims and objectives of National Solid Waste Support Centre.

NSWMSC was established at the Ministry of Provincial Councils in January 2007 by following the recommendations of the Study on Improvement Solid waste Management in secondary Cities conducted by JICA in 2002 and 2003.

Already JICA has dispatched experts to the NSWMSC and they are working with the Sri Lankan Staff of the NSWMSC to prepare action plans of SWM for selected local authorities.

True! 225 in parliament, and the other 'Solid waste' sitting in the Provincial Councils, Pradeshiya Sabhas, MCs, and UCs is definitely a huge 'garbage problem' the Nation has.

Compared to the 'cost' to the Nation the 'benefit' would be an easy 90% 'Solid waste'.

All people (other than politicians) have to do something about it!

Yeah, the biggest SOLID WASTE we have been having since independence is the governments we elected.

Mr. Minister, Solid Waste became a serious problem a long time ago. You have not even woken up to it. Any idea how to get rid of the Solid Waste of which you are a part? OMG, I am asking the wrong person!
