A great man. Sri Lanka could not properly make use of his expertise.

May he RIP.

(As for Sinhalese more friendly what rubbish? They will look at the prospective client first and then plan their strategy. If one is well dressed he gets more respect. They call any white skinned Mahaththya even if he is a sanitary cleaner. When you embark in the morning do you see any pleasant face of Bus Crew, Staff at the Station, Reception of any of the Institutions? (bar some private banks who have their own interest) -

They double bend if you see a Westerner and give him priority at any place or event.

I do not want to comment on Tamil community. But as for our own nation it is the personal interest first rather than being friendly for hospitality reasons!

In Australia I find Sinhalese get friendly with white people easily than Tamils.

PeacemakerSri,
Do you mean 'Dating'?
or some other means to get friendly?

As you love Sri Lanka, why don't you give awareness on safety measures to those get friendly with whites.

Peacemaker,

This is one good aspect of Sinhalese. (I havn't observed Tamils in Sri Lanka)

Sinhalese make friends and mix with westerners very well.

This is the irony, how can you make peace when you are not aware of the hospitality of the Tamils in the N&E??

But you must know that both Tamils and Sinhalese are very hospitable people and they are very nice to any visitors.

But sadly the ethnic divide (obviously due to the backward thinking of the majority) has led to this ill feeling between the two races.

Other wise both are equally hospitable and friendly. You must speak to the Sinhalese who have visited or lived in the North during good times and they will praise them from their bottom of their hearts.

There is a nice book by Vernon Gunasekara, one time GA of Jaffna who died last year in Melbourne, My memories of Jaffa and that will give in nutshell what Jaffna is and its proud people.

Sadly all that is ruined. How can jaffna man could trust if his ancient library was burnt by an Oxford educated Minister or so many of their people are ruthlessly being killed by irresponsible and unconcerned majority (not all)!

As a 'suda' who spends long periods on Sri Lanka I have never noticed any difference in attitudes towards foreigners from Sinhalese and Tamils (and of course in many cases it is quite impossible to distinguish between them).

Clarke was an excellent writer, (my favorite was Rendezvous with Rama), an informed commentator on some scientific matters, an ecological campaigner, and did a sterling job popularizing Sri Lanka abroad

And some trivia one of the things he campaigned for for many years was for Lanka to get rid of the half hour time difference with GMT. He announced how happy he was when Chandrika eventually did this. Unfortunately for him, as we all know, Mahinda went back to the old way.

He was not honored by the British queen because of his involvement of sexual abuse.

Mahinda did the correct thing by setting the clock to normal.Chandrika's stupidity coats us many million dollars of foreign exchange!
Clarke is a good writer and a story teller. Not a good scientist. He fabricated stories based on already predicted facts from other scientists.
He is white man who had fair amount of income from various sources.Stupid Lankan have a habit of wagging tail to white skins.
WE had many scientists better and clever than Clarke but unfortunately all of them had black skin!!

Thanks for demonstrating the typical Sri Lankan 'frog in the well' mentality.

Guys,
Myself and 5 of my batch mates had a rare chance to meet him in 1988. We were studying computer technology and we got to know that he had one of the very first computers ( I think it was a 1970 IMB SCAMP or something - If Tony Mahadevan is here, please confirm that I am right) and we sent him a letter and we got invited to his Ward place home.. ( Hey.. we went in a group of 5.. just in case)
He was a delightful man and he had many of the early computers there ( lot of them were donated to him by the manufacturer ) and the most brilliant part was after fiddling with them for a few minutes, he was able to get them programmed with a simple program.

It is a Great Loss to Sri Lanka and the world.

RIP.
