Disparaging dead does not go with our culture, but this was hardly observed in LNP (eg Thamilselvan) so I do not see why I make an exception for Anura B.
If I were to select a word to describe him the first word that comes to my mind is 'parasite'. Here was a man who did virtually nothing good to the country (Can someone please come up with a single thing he did, other than speeches quoting Shakespeare?) but lived in luxury enjoying everything Los Angeles and Paris could offer on PUBLIC MONEY.
He should not have got into national politics first place. One of the biggest mistakes his mother did was to offer him a prominent place in the party which was one key reason that kept SLFP out of power for 17 years.
He believed pedigree would offer everything in the world to him in a plate and there is no need to earn that. Sadly, he was wrong.
Finally, it is not fair to acquit him for things his mother, father and sister did.
The only GOOD things I can say about him is (like his father) he never became an instrument in the hands of Sinhalese chauvinists, or (like his mother) pseudo socialists. He was also not as corrupted as his sister.
May he attain Nibbana asap.

Under Dharmista JR, for the first time in Sri Lanka a few students of Universities of Colombo and Moratuwa were abducted and taken to Sri Kotha UNP headquarters by thugs of Ranil and Cyril Mathew then Ministers of JR Govt. This happened in late 1970s.
There were only two politicians in Sri Lanka to raise this matter in Parliament......
and they were Late Mr Amirthalingum and Late Mr Anura Bandaranayake.
I still respect them for their said noble act.
May Anura attain Nibbana!
PS: Ranil or UNP has no moral right to talk about armed political thugs and miscarriage of democracy in SL. |

Kalumagic,
That was not the only occasion Anura B has spoken on behalf of University students. When three university students were abducted and killed allegedly by Susantha Punchinilame in late 1980s, Anura B was the first to reveal that in parliament.
But what good that did to country? These are all games to gain power. Not that he ever had a concern for human freedom. Anura s revelations did nothing to prevent such killings repeating under later regimes.
Abductions and killings of worse scale had been done during the last two years (eg. five headless bodies found in Ratnapura, red cross staff killings, mass grave at Kebithigollawa) These are killings happened in South let alone the killings happened in North, which we hardly learn anything about. Anura B was a member of the cabinet but he never raised his mouth even once against any of these killings.
He also had no problems in working together with the same Susantha Punchinilame he once exposed to a serious allegation.

As an SLFP'er I did not like Anura's Politics. As an SLFP'er it was very sad and dissapointing to watch CBK and Anura supporting Traitor Ranil against Mahinda.......
These Bandaranaike's have forgotten how much the Rajapaksa's (3 Generations) helped and supported the Bandaranaike's.....
In that sense these Bandaranaikes are self centered and ungrateful.
Anyway, my deepest sympathies to the family! |

Guys all of you all have similar views about Anura B.
We all have more bad than good.
This person is gone..he made few timely verbal remarks to the state in and out of Parliament.
Except he coudn&t find the charisma, people expected.. more from his breed.
But some took him to ride, use his position to build there political agendas.
He was not a bad one comparing to Politicians who rob and slit innocent people.
May Anura Attain Nibbana !

Anura was not a thug or a rogue and he should be respected at least for that eventhough politically his contribution to the country is not anything worthy of significance.
May his soul rest in peace.
