Cabinet yesterday approved a proposal to increase electricity tariffs.

According to sources, there will be no increase up to 90 units there will be an increase of 20% to 25% above 90 units. The decision not to increase tariffs below 90 units has been made with a view to encouraging consumers to cut down on consumption of electricity.

In addition, the Electricity Board has decided to add a 30% fuel surcharge to the bills of consumers who use more than 90 units.

The revision is aimed at reducing the huge losses incurred by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), which amount to Rs 43 billion.

Politicians and their incapable, inefficient cronies who head the departments are the root cause of the losses, and the people are made to pay for the folly of these good for nothing hoodlums.

This is a sick and sorry country. One party comes to power, earn as much as they can for next 10 generations and gives the control to the other. They, then start the same thing. Everybody talks about this at length but no one knows where the end is. All these hikes are due to the rulers of this country both past and present.

End? There will be no 'End' and your generalisation is spot on as it is a story of passing the baton to one another at the elections!

If anyone wants to see an 'end' then that person has to put an 'end' to living in the country and begin living somewhere else!

If this government stays in power for the next 5 to 10 years we'll get into the Guinness Book of Records for the world's most expensive electricity. It is already more expensive than the USA and most European countries.

Can anyone explain to me (I am not sri lankan) how your electricity system works, I mean what is a unit and what can function on 90 units?
