Karuna Karuna..
I am positive that you will change your views if you had seen number of bodies lying in B..... Government Hospital morgue!
I know, its so sad that all these Sri Lankan females are facing. I have once only to Dubai Air port for 12h, in that micro event I saw, how people treat our females.
But, still the poverty is paramount in SL. If you go to passport office, in Punchi-boralla, you wil see 100s of Sinhala.Muslim (and Tamils too), females are rushing to get passport to to go ME.
Government is not directly forcing them to go (yes, poverty is the responsibility of GOSL), but people are going.
Many things must change together, gradually, not just STOP by the end of year 100%.
We saw, once GOSL wanted do some limitation in three-wheel taxi. Didnt work.
When the matter is directly related to poverty, any drastic change always force to crack the system. GOSL must be flexible.
For LTTE matter too, same. Today, GOSL said, no peace talk with LTTE. This is not very good decision. GOSL must behave with the responsibility of Majority. Even at this moment, GOSL must ready to treat LTTE as part of the Sri Lankans. No any other option. By force, its hard. |

I have to agree with you. Our neighbours, India and Bangladesh who, I believe, supplied Maids to the Gulf countries before SL, stopped it after realising that there were more minuses than pluses. The Gulf countries turned to SL only after India and Bangladesh stopped the supply. Both countries were poor then and still face massive poverty. Though India has seen much economic progress in recent years, poverty and unemployment in rural areas is still a very serious problem. Poverty and unemployment in Bangladesh must be still as bad as it was when the Maid supply was stopped. Compared to India and Bangladesh, Sri Lanka is much better off on poverty and unemployment.
What has to be considered is not only the exploitation and suffering of these women but, more importantly, the disruption it causes to the family here with children getting adversely affected. It is the mother who is with the children most of the time and the absence of the mothers for prolonged periods severely affects the children while the father mostly goes gallivanting.
Lets hope the President really means business.
It is also very important that the President takes some meaningful action to protect the women workers overseas from being exploited while taking strong action against all those unscrupulous Agents who pry on the hapless women. |

we can write a lot about our ladies suffering etc..but we should stop and ask what we have done for them..
In that manner i am very proud to say we did do our part in Hong Kong. My wife went to visit those who were in the shed and we spent money on Food and groceries..The only helping hand comes by the way of a christian Church..
That is the reason i feel the Gosl without stopping it should look for alternatives..improve their system by making the embassies to do better job..I feel we can stop the abuse and take care of them rather than completely messing them up..

Yes with my first hand experience I have to reiterate that our people go to Middle East not for employment but slavery.
This has to be stopped in toto fullstop.
Rather establish a call girl service in SL than sending our women to Middle East (as Housemaids).
