Berty,
if you hold a Australian Passport, your not an Expat
If you hold a SL passport with Valid Australian working visa, then your an Expat
If you hold a SL passport with no valid Visa..ur an 'ILLEGAL' immigrant

I'll choose 'c'! :)

Berty,
I disagree...if he has a Hong Kong passport he is an Expat now in SL but when he was in HK he was NOT!!

Looks like you have a problem in understanding the meaning of Expat ***winkie wink***

Well I have no idea about his Passport, anyway he seems to consider himself as a Sri Lankan than a Hong Kong resident/citizen and definitely it seems fit for your(or Wiki) def of Expat. so he sure seems like Expat when he was in HK.

BTW didnt you said something about not talking about people when they are not around? *wink*

I too want this traffic to be stopped or drastically reduced. It does not matter, whether one is a Sinhala, Tamil, or Muslim, it is heart rendering to see these poor people are being exploited both by unscrupulous Agents in Sri Lanka and then by the uncultured Arabs.

Without failing, every time I passed Sri Lankan airport, I helped to fill up embarkation cards etc. I have done this for Tamils, Sinhalese, and Muslims my heart was telling me to advice them not to go, knowing full well what they would be subjected to, but, what could I give them in return. In one occasion, I was with my family, and had to take a girl to boarding gate as she had no clue and looked totally disoriented. It left my daughter in tears.

Now, to the point about MR and his rhetoric is he a serious statesmen with a vision? This ludicrous action alone manifests his shallowness of vision. He knows that, it has a good sound bite that will resonate with the Sinhala masses, and to hell with the poor lot.

How can he stop this traffic suddenly without having a strategy for alternative actions?

Does he have a budget to set up a mechanism to deal with such a mammoth task that has implications with peoples livelihoods?

This tells me that, MR is a president who takes decisions on the basis of sustaining popularity among the masses than to build a county with a view for long terms stability and growth encompassing all communities empowering them to govern themselves with dignity. He wants to be a champion of Sinhala Buddhists than a champion of Sri Lankans. With a unitary state concept, he needs no one other than the Sinhala Buddhists.

Very wise decision. As a man who had been on the spot I know sending women as housemaids is counter-productive despite the influx of the foreign exchange.

90% mostly young are sexually abused either by the Master/siblings or some other employee in the household. If she has the freedom to go out she will fall pray to some other urchin roaming the streets.

Absence of a mother/wife causes disastrous effects socially in their families at home.

The average salary paid to housemaid p.m. is US $ 100/-. If she remits this money monthly she will loose $ 10/- as commission. The contract period is 2 years and 3 months and she receives her payments correctly she will end up with US 2700 - 270 = US $ 2480/-) If she saves all her earnings (very unlikely as she she has to send money back home for their upkeep) it is worth around Rs.300 thousand. What can you do with that in Sri Lanka with present inflation?

The hubby starts enjoying his freedom and children have neither Mother or Father.

Yes this is counterproductive. Most of the maids yearn to go again and again until their good looks vanishes. They come on holiday and return back and their priority is the Arab boss and the life style in those countries. They find that 2 years earning has not provided much other than some cloths and the Hi-Fi set up they purchase from their savings. The family in Sri Lanka becomes secondary.

India and Bangladesh do not allow their women to go to Middle East to become slaves of rich Arabs. We must follow suit.

They do not go for a profession it is slavery. Maids have no regular working hours and however much professed there is no legally binding agreement or contract to protect them and Maids do not come under Labour laws in the ME.

I however wonder whether the powerful mafia of Labour Recruiting Agencies in Sri Lanka will allow this directive to be carried out. Yes I have my doubts.

March 13 (Bloomberg) -- Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapaksa said elections will be held for a provincial council in the east in the first stage of a power-sharing plan aimed at settling the issue of Tamil separatism.

''Sri Lanka has proved through its eastern operations that terrorism can be defeated,'' he added.

Karuna's paramilitary threatened families it would forcibly conscript their children unless they voted for the TMVP, TamilNet reported on its Web site earlier this week.

I think, even through unfair events, east election is a new chapter in SL.

Sri Lanka will be joining G8 soon!

G8 will then become G9! All due to MR's Chintanaya!

I think the plan is to replace low payed-unskilled workers with higher salaried-skilled workers such a nurses, gradually, over time.

How practical it is, I'm not sure, especially with the current facilities and infrastructure.

Anyway the intentions are good. I hope it works out somehow..

Karunawardene,

Change is great, but it must come from the grass root level.
Government fist must protect peole already in ME, and waiting to go there.

Sending trained nurses is a good plan, but its will not help all these poor females those who are going there.

GOSL must attend to both aspects, and gradually decrease the number to houses in ME.

Any sudden change, will be like Sirimawo's failed good works.
