Rajapakse family as well as all the governments that ruled the country are responsible for making the country a failed state, said the Opposition Leader and the leader of National Congress Ranil Wickramasinghe yesterday (10) at the launch of National Discourse Manifesto at Colombo New Town Hall.

Addressing the seminar themed `National Policy through National Discourse,` Mr. Wickramasinghe said that Sri Lanka now ranks first among the countries where the highest number of disappearances are reported and the sovereignty has dilapidated.

`People call the leaders as well as the MPs thieves and the honor the previous people`s representatives enjoyed has disappeared. Civil society, religious leaders and media today kneel before them.`

`Sri Lanka that owned the best university of Asia in the past has none of the 50 topmost universities in Asia now. Just that fact show the failure of the country.`

`No use of blaming US, Europe, China or India for our failures. Instead, we have to turn and see where we failed.`

`We have a responsibility to build this country irrespective of race and religious disparities. The National Congress was built in that purpose,` said Mr. Wickramasinghe.

National Congress Convener, SLFP - People`s Wing leader and Mathara district MP Mangala Samaraweera addressing the gathering said, `I have no right to get rid of the responsibility of errors since I was a senior Minister since 1994 and I am responsible for the destruction in the past twenty years.`

`So far, we prepared policies to catch power when in opposition and to consolidate power when in government. No party was able to prepare a national policy based on a vision that is apt for the country.`

`War has become the livelihood of a minority and a shield to cover the failures and corruptions of the incapable rulers.`

`Our own children armed in north and south are named terrorists and war heroes. Budding youths are killed and disabled in this bloody war. Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim people have become destitute due to this war. War has taken many things from us.`

`We failed to achieve the economic and social development the neighboring countries gained after the Independence. We cannot put the blame only on the politicians and we all should get together to change the situation.`

`National Congress is the platform that can unite UNP and SLFP. We should convene all non-extremist, democratic Sri Lankans to National Congress. National Congress will come forward as the common platform of all the moderate political parties`` said Mr. Samaraweera.

Don't we know that? What you don't know is that we just CANNOT trust any of you politicians to put things right. We are looking to the Heavens to save us and this country.

National Congress is the platform that can unite UNP and SLFP.

OMG. Then all you crooks who ruined the country since independence will be together on the same side. Where will that take the country? By any chance, if you guys grab power, that will be the time to take the first plane out of the country!

We Sri Lankans are a useless set of people living in a fantastic country rich in resources. We Sri Lankans are not capable of selecting our leaders nor are we capable of making use of those rich resources for the benefit of the Nation.

In Sri Lanka there is absolutely no unity be it relegion, race, cast, class etc etc and sometimes even in families.

Sri Lanka is a good example of 'United we stand devided we fall'.

Try to learn 1 or 2 things from countries like Singapore, Canada or Switzerland where multi ethnic communities unite to preserve peace and harmony.

Singapore (unitary system): with equality of status to all the languages from its inception.

Canada, Switzerland, other Western Countries: A true federal or Con-federal system with equality of status for all the communities.

Why did Sri Lanka fail?

The majority community wanted to impose their language, Sinhala Only' illegally and kept the ethnic minorities under their clutches.

'The majority community wanted to impose their language, Sinhala Only' illegally and kept the ethnic minorities under their clutches.'

It was the Sinhala official language act which was enacted in 1956. It was not 'Sinhala only' as many of you very conveniently and incorrectly state. Every country has an official language. Sri Lanka is no exception. At the time, Sinhalese comprised of 78% of the population. If there was one official language, logic and common sense would dictate that it be the language spoken by the majority, which was overwhelmingly Sinhales. Nevertheless, all this change in 1978 when Tamil was also recognized as an official language which is very conveniently omitted.
Let us also remember, the official language of India is Hindi which is spoken by only 44% of the population

You know, i don't care who started it,either its UNP or SLFP, your ultimate motive is to destroy all Tamils. All of you are commenting from USA, London, from all over the world, if you have that much pain as a Srilankan why cant you go and fight for your country, like tigers fighting for freedom not for money because they don't get paid.

..Nope Sri Lanka is not a failed state..

Its a SuperPower with rocket technology :-))
Thirty years of war against the minorities and still not victory. + 70'000 dead. They, the majority, do and rule, the minority watch and useless.

Innocents die. Is it the price to force people to be united ?

An union cant be forced infinitely, there is a limit !!

The Law of Perfect gases.

What is this Mahajana Sabha? Is it similar to a confession chamber in a church?

The biggest confession has been made by SB, a regret that UNP did not participate in Batti elections.

Now Ranil is standing in front of Election Department with a mega phone in his hand, putting out a show just to save his head. Poor thing, is threatening to stop elections in the Eastern province and lashing PAFEREL for failing to report (or fabricate) any election violence.

What's wrong with this guy? He does nothing right. Yet the UNP is cursed enough to keep him as the leader. Any guess who casted this curse on UNP?

I did.

My family supported Mahinda Rajapaksa who was MP for Belliatte and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Candidate for the Belliatte Electorate in 1977.

The elections were held on the 21 st of July 1977. Traitor Ranil and JRJ Won the Elections. The Rajapaksa's lost. What did Traitor Ranil and JRJ do after winning????

They Closed down the Police Stations for TWO WEEKS and started ATTACKING SLFP supporters like us. Our Home was Burnt to the Ground. We lost everything we owned. My father's fishing boat was also burnt. We were not allowed to lodge a complaint in the Police as the Police was closed.
