Thug In Robes

Sunday, 2 March 2008 - 2:53 AM SL Time

Matara Police are investigating an alleged assault of Pankaja Sankalpa, the ITN correspondent there, by Chief Adhikarana Sangha Nayake of the Southern Province Ven. Getamane Siridhammakitti Thera.

Sankalpa had gone to Anura Vidyalaya, Matara on a request to cover an event by the students of the school on February 28th.

When the Thera was called upon to light the traditional oil lamp, he had reportedly abused the journalist and ordered him out.

Pankaja was also grabbed by his shirt and assaulted - he told `Lanka Dissent` - in the presence of around 1,500 persons, including the Matara Assistant Education Director, principals of several schools and schoolchildren.

The Thera had continued to use abusive language on the journalist, prompting two other photographers present there, to leave the function.

Four years ago, the Thera had been arrested by the Matara Headquarters Police on the charge of brutally raping a schoolgirl.

Sankalpa was the correspondent who had covered the incident for ITN.

The court had released the rape suspect on bail, and ordered him not to visit the southern province without permission.

In a complaint to the Matara Police, the journalist says that he believes a connection between his coverage of the case to the assault.

Media organizations in Matara have strongly condemned this assault.

Please don't get on a high horse: this is nothing against Buddhism but showing the hypocrisy of our society that is willing to accept them in the name of religion.

Why is he still in robes? If the reason is that the court has not still found him guilty. Then shouldnt he confined to the temple?

If he was accused of brutally raping a schoolgirl then he is a pedophile: what is he doing in a school environment?

Our Legal system?
What is the court doing on a rape case for four years while the accused is free to re-offend? Shouldn't the court at least put restrictions on his access to children?

Did not put his pic to show some respect to Buddhism.
