Singapore (AHN)-Security was heightened at the Woodlands Checkpoint in Singapore on Friday when immigration officers found an illegal immigrant hidden in the luggage compartment of a travel coach.
The immigrant, who was arrested, is a Sri Lankan man in his late 20s. He was discovered when security officers were conducting routine checks on vehicles leaving the country. The Malaysian bus driver, conspiring with the Sri Lankan stowaway, was also arrested.
Police and security authorities in Singapore were alarmed because there is an ongoing manhunt for escaped terrorist Mas Selamat Kastari, who broke out of a detention center on Wednesday. Preliminary investigations showed the illegal immigrant is not linked to Kastari.
Since three days ago, immigration checkpoints in Singapore have been put on high alert for the missing Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist.
