The International Red Cross accuses Sri Lanka of manipulating rights data
Thursday, 20 March 2008 - 8:56 AM SL Time

The International Red Cross on Wednesday angrily accused Sri Lanka s government of releasing confidential communications and manipulating information from the organisation to defend its rights record.

In rare public criticism of a government, the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Colombo has been misrepresenting its findings to stave off allegations it was behind abductions and disappearances. The row surrounds Sri Lanka s use of a confidential report by the ICRC, which did not give a figure for disappearances on the war-torn island, to dispute ongoing allegations that hundreds of people had gone missing on the island.

LTTE told to seek India`s help to put off sri lanka`s east provincial polls
Wednesday, 19 March 2008 - 7:53 PM SL Time

Pro-rebel MPs in Sri Lanka have urged the LTTE to seek India`s help in `putting off` provincial elections to be held in the island`s east on May 10, saying the poll results would not be a true reflection of the people`s choice as they would be `rigged`.

The proposal was made by 13 MPs of the Tamil National Alliance during talks with LTTE political head P Nadesan when they met to pay their last respects to slain TNA lawmaker K Sivanesan, who was killed in a roadside bomb attack on March 6 in Wanni.

A visiting high level EU delegation has insisted that the government allow the Co-chairs and the Norwegian facilitators to travel to the Wanni to meet the LTTE to deliver key messages -- including a request to resume the peace process, to observe humanitarian access and to respect human rights.

The Daily Mirror, however, learns the government had asserted it was not possible to provide immediate access to the Wanni to any diplomat owing to the prevailing security situation in the areas controlled by the LTTE, which is under attack by the military.

``I`m perfectly operational underwater,`` he once said.

He was the co-author with Stanley Kubrick of Kubrick`s film ``2001: A Space Odyssey,`` but he was regarded as far more than a science fiction writer.

The Lanka Private Bus Owners Association will discontinue bus operations on three routes unless they are provided with adequate space to park buses. Sir Arthur C Clarke
Thursday, 20 March 2008 - 9:48 AM SL Time
Sitting in your living room in Colombo while watching a cricket match being played in Sydney `live` is something that we take for granted. Think for a moment about the complexity of it all.

The two countries are thousands of kilometers apart, yet the pictures and sounds are so clear that the event could well be happening on the ground next door. It is almost magical.

Furthermore, if you so desire, you can just pick up the phone and dial the mobile of a friend who is actually at the ground. And there is one man we have to thank for making this happen: Sir Arthur C Clarke, who famously declared that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Let us Protect our Friend
Sunday, 16 March 2008 - 10:10 PM SL Time
Good friends are different from covert enemies in that friends help each other to stay away from danger by giving prior advises.

Maybe a lot of Sri Lankans do not know that the US Department of State is a silent but genuine friend of Sri Lanka. Let me quote one example that I know for sure. US Department of State has been continuously empowering Sri Lanka to develop effective approaches to detect and remove anti-personal landmines. When a lot of other NGOs adopted destructive mechanisms like removing the top soil layer in the sensitive farmlands in Jaffna where the fertile soil layer is very thin, the US State Department assisted agencies used trained dogs to sniff for landmines that causes minimum damage to the environment. Not only that, their approach extended beyond just `giving fish to those who need fish` like many other NGOs do, to `giving fishing rods to those who need fish` by sharing know-how and empowering local institutes. All these things were done in silence like a true friend of Sri Lanka.
