Prabhakaran `hale and hearty`, says Sri Lanka`s Tamil MP
Sunday, 9 March 2008 - 7:50 AM SL Time

Tamil Tigers chief V Prabhakaran is `hale and hearty and ruling skillfully`, a lawmaker of pro-LTTE party has said, rejecting claims that the elusive rebel leader was injured.

`Incorrect statements are being made saying Prabhakaran is injured in an air-attack,` MP Selvarajah Gajendran of Tamil National Alliance (TNA), the LTTE proxies in parliament, said.

`He (Prabhakaran) is quite healthy and ruling skillfully,` the lawmaker from strife-torn Jaffna told the House earlier this week while speaking on a motion to extend emergency in Sri Lanka by one month.

Ethnic Divide Worsens as Sri Lanka Conflict Escalates
Saturday, 8 March 2008 - 8:55 PM SL Time
Newyork Times

There are no eyes on this war. A truce between the Sri Lankan government and the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam is over, and gone are the Nordic monitors who kept watch over it.
The government has refused entry to United Nations human rights monitors. Independent journalists are not allowed anywhere near the front lines. Only occasionally does a glimpse of the war s damage surface, as when the Red Cross confirmed that in the first six weeks of this year alone, 180 civilians had been killed, a toll it called appalling.

A shocking crime!
Sunday, 9 March 2008 - 7:56 AM SL Time
It is with shock and dismay that we note the killing of TNA MP K. Sivanesan on Thursday. With his tragic end, the number of the slain members of the present Parliament has risen to six. Sivanesan was travelling through an LTTE-held area when a claymore mine hit his vehicle. The kneejerk reaction of the LTTE was to blame it on the army long rangers. The government lost no time in holding the LTTE responsible for the blast.

If the LTTE s claim is true, then what has become of its impregnable defences? Is it being beaten at its own game? And where have all its shadow warriors gone? Is it that the LTTE has come to such a pass that it cannot at least ensure the safety of its proxies in a terrain that it claims to be its separate state?

Responsibility lost in a jungle of rights
Friday, 7 March 2008 - 4:41 AM SL Time
Father of Medicine, Hippocrates, would spin in his grave if he knew about the conduct of some physicians in this blessed land. Yesterday, we reported that a specialist doctor in Ratnapura had allegedly given a trainee nurse an injection by way of punishment for a mistake she had made. The nurse is said to have been warded following that jab of wrath. The nurses unions are on the warpath demanding stern against the doctor. The doctor is reported to have told the police that he only demonstrated to the trainee nurse how an injection should be given. What a way to conduct a demonstration! The incident has yet to be probed fully and we don t intend to subject the doctor concerned to a media trial. But, it is surprising that doctors trade unions and professional associations which go into the attack mode at the drop of a hat over issues concerning their rights and privileges have not been jolted into action on this score.

On the fast track to hell
Thursday, 6 March 2008 - 7:34 AM SL Time
Judicial activism is, no doubt, anathema to ruling politicians and their cronies bent on keeping democratic institutions under their dirty thumb. But, it is a blessing for the ordinary people who are suffering in silence. It is also the best way to defeat autocratic tendencies of rulers of all hues and decelerate a country s slide towards anarchy consequent upon arrogance of power as well as the attendant public anger and disillusionment with democratic institutions.

There are times when the modern day judges have to emulate Azdak in Brecht s Caucasian Chalk Circle. The hapless people being preyed on by political hyenas and commercial vultures must be assured that the law is on their side, if democracy is to be preserved. For, in the absence of confidence in the democratic process, a despondent public only have a choice between fatalistic resignation to their pathetic lot or adoption of ultra radical methods to have themselves heard or to avenge injustice.
