Yakadaya as a Super Star
Wednesday, 5 March 2008 - 5:09 AM SL Time
There is nothing in this universe that politicians and their henchmen don t use to gain mileage. We even see them declare open public toilets, don t we? (A wag says that is where they belong!) They haven t spared a single wayside wall or lamppost their posters and cutouts are ubiquitous. When Sanath and Murali reach turning points in their cricketing careers, it is not their hearts that skip a beat but those of political leaders anxious to be seen with them and share the limelight. When Murali set a new world record a few months ago, politicians flocked to Kandy like crows to congratulate him before TV cameras. Never mind the Master Blaster and the Spin Wizard, who are genuine heroes who have put this country on the map. Even lesser minions who have become known for anti-social activities are going places thanks to politicians predilection for mileage.

Stoning the press in the City of Gems: Some musings
Tuesday, 4 March 2008 - 8:00 AM SL Time
Among the many uses of the free press is the purpose it serves as a punching bag for political potentates. It receives, punches, kicks and head butts relentlessly but it is always politicians who grow tired in the end. The game of media bashing is as old as the hills. And that will go on so long as politicians inhabit this planet. If given a choice between creating a world without terrorism and a world without a free media, politicians would opt for the latter.

As a red rag to a bull, so has the free press been to the executive presidents of this country. The mere mention of the press has been sufficient for them to go into a fit of rage. So, it was only natural that President Mahinda Rajapaksa suddenly blew a gasket, while addressing a public rally in Ratnapura (City of Gems) on Sunday and started lambasting the media to his heart s content.

Foreign Ministry snakes under the grass
Monday, 3 March 2008 - 4:13 AM SL Time
There is a disease affecting envoys from small nations serving in big countries. It is called the Ambassadorial Syndrome, which means they begin to speak more for their hosts than for their own countries. Inferiority complex and self-advancement are said to be the causes of that diplomatic malady. The most pronounced symptom of the disease is that the infected launch vitriolic attacks on the non-infected.

The latest victims of those sick Sri Lankan diplomats are Sri Lanka s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva Dr. Dayan Jayatilleke and Head of the Secretariat for Co-operating the Peace Process Pro. Rajiv Wijesingha two intellectuals with the pluck to stand up to foreign pressure and defend the national interest. They are not obviously deriving some sadistic pleasure from their iconoclastic propaganda onslaughts on defied foreign dignitaries who are holy to the whole caboodle of castrated Sri Lankan envoys posted abroad, armchair commentators on foreign affairs and some media pundits hooked to licking boots of western diplomats. Instead, they are trying to do something for the country.

Sri Lanka`s happy ending to a poor tour
Sunday, 2 March 2008 - 8:38 AM SL Time
But Sanga s dismissal at this point, when he decided to go after the bowling of Praveen Kumar, opened the now familiar floodgates and it was only some resolute batting by Chamara Kapugedera and the tail-enders that saved our blushes. A total of 179 on a flat, good batting track was not what we had hoped for in a must win match and the rest is now history.

At our team meeting after the game against India we talked again about our batting. It seemed that some players were worried about failure which in turn affected their performance. With the tournament finalists now a foregone conclusion, we decided to play a more relaxed game on Friday.
