Muttusamy Ilango alias Samy, one of the top undercover LTTE international operatives, arrested recently in a Colombo lodge, had confessed that he was responsible for several illegal operations such as abducting businessmen and extorting funds for the terrorist outfit besides running arms shipments and drug smuggling, a police special investigation team source told The Island.
Apart from the ship that was destroyed in an attack by the Sri Lankan armed forces, he owns a number of other ships he told investigators.
Explaining his presence in Colombo, Ilango, a Sri Lankan domiciled in Singapore, said he met the leader of the LTTE suicide bombing training group in Singapore and was convinced that he should help the LTTE. He had arrived in Sri Lanka with the intention of filing a lawsuit against the government to claim compensation for the destruction of one of his ships.
He had also told police that he had joined the Singapore Air Force and served as a pilot for some time.
During his current visit to the country he had travelled to Jaffna, Vavuniya, Batticaloa and was arrested by the police at a lodge in Colombo.
Ilango was also involved in assisting the LTTE international fund raising campaign, gun running and several other international rackets including defrauding foreign job seekers and drug peddling, police investigations have revealed.

What can't be included in a confession? The authorities write the confession and the confessor merely signs it with or without pressure. Under the PTA any confession is accepted to go against an accused.
Under the normal operation of the Criminal Procedure Code and Evidence Ordinance only confessions made to a magistrate or Police officers above ASP are accepted and that also could be challenged at a voir dire inquiry to ascertain the genuiness. But the PTA sweeps all that aside.
An interesting fact is why this billionaire ship owner chose to stay at some lodge and risk arrest when he could have stayed at some plush hotel in the city which never would get raided by anyone.

Probably it was easy to make contacts and also wanted a low profile of his presence. |
