The Government yesterday denied reports that Labour Minister Mervin Silva was to be appointed to the Constitutional Council. The Government said that no member of a political party could be appointed to the CC under the provisions of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution that stipulated that only persons of eminence who are not members of political parties could be appointed, said Chief Government Whip Jeyaraj Fernandopulle to a question by JVP group leader Wimal Weerawansa. He said though Minister Mervin Silva could be described as an eminent person he was a member of a political party.

Mervin just as qualified as any other politician in the south. In fact he's better qualified than our 'President' in some aspects! :P

I think that he offered to resign from his Parliament membership and perhaps from the party. Isn't he still not qualifies to be member of CC?

Honestly I feel he is well qualified to be a permanent inmate of Prison.

I think this is the beginning of the end for Dr. Mervin...

I think GoSL is handling his kick-out issue slow & steady.... anyway, some faces in SLRC will also be disappeared at the end ...

this is a good lesson for bad politicians....

The next move by the govt. will be to amend the provisions of the 17th Amendment so that Mervyn may become qualified for CC. That is why Mervyn changed his mind on his 'resignation'.
