An international animal rights organisation has protested the bombing of a zoo in Dehiwela in Sri Lanka, allegedly by Tamil Tiger rebels earlier this month.
`In addition to injuring several human beings - which was no doubt its intent - the explosive device that was set off near the zoo`s birds enclosure terrified many animals in the zoo,` said Ingrid E. Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in a letter to the Tamil Tiger leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran.
At least seven people, including two children, were injured, when a grenade kept near the birds` enclosure went off Feb 3.
Newkirk said that animals got caught in the cross fire of wars all over the world and countless animals were being killed either intentionally or accidentally in bomb attacks worldwide.
`Al Qaeda and the British government have used animals in hideously cruel biological weaponry tests, and the US Army abandoned thousands of loyal service dogs at the end of the war in Vietnam,` she pointed out.
`If you have the opportunity, will you please consider my request and appeal to all those who listen to you to leave animals out of the conflict?` Newkirk asked Prabhakaran.

Animal rights OK, some one concerned.
What about Human rights? What did any body do any thing for the civilian deaths, at least from the beginning of this year?. Human life is so cheap.

Three Muslim men have been arrested on suspicion of the Sunday bomb blast in Dehiwela Zoo and are being kept in detention, sources said.
Those arrested have been identified as M.M.Musthapha, 38, M.M.Raafi, 23, and M.M.Shafie, 23, all from Kaththankudy, Batticaloa district.
The men recently arrived in Colombo to seek employment and went to visit the Zoo. However, immediately after the bomb blast they got into an auto and directed the driver to take them to their residence.
Since the passengers were speaking in Tamil, on suspicion the driver drove the vehicle up to Dehiwela police station and handed over them to the police.
The police arrested the men and detained them for inquiries.
Meanwhile, the relatives of the arrested men met Dehiwela police and clarified the reason for the three men to reside in Colombo.
The blast at Dehiwala zoo comes in the wake of a number of blasts and killings in Sri Lanka's most popular wildlife sanctuaries.
The zoo has been closed until further notice.
Foreign tourist visits to Sri Lanka have declined by 20 per cent in 2007. Tourism is Sri Lanka's fourth largest source of foreign exchange, next to remittances from diaspora and overseas workers. Tamilnet, if, if not true, arrest the police |
