India slump hands Australia win

Australia produced a superb bowling display to beat India by 50 runs and take a big lead in the one-day series.

The Aussies needed Michael Clarke (79) and Brad Hogg (32) to help them to 203-9 as Irfan Pathan (4-41) and Ishant Sharma (2-32) shone for the tourists.

Sachin Tendulkar fell for only five as India slumped to 59-4 in reply before Yuvraj Singh (26) and Mahendra Dhoni (37) rallied them with a stand of 56.

Once they went the Indians were out for 153, with Mitchell Johnson taking 3-42.

It was quite a turnaround after the Australian top order, which has struggled in the series, misfired again on a decent batting wicket.

Adam Gilchrist, who made a century in Friday`s win over Sri Lanka, was cramped for space by a good Sharma delivery and chopped the ball on to his stumps for 15.

Ricky Ponting cut Munaf Patel straight to point to leave his tally 53 runs in five games, while the equally out-of-sorts Matthew Hayden struck a massive six off Patel before cutting Pathan behind.

Andrew Symonds dabbed Sharma to gully to make it 38 runs in four games for him and even the normally reliable Mike Hussey nicked to the keeper for just five.

Clarke, who was a doubt before the game with bruised ribs, showed his more experienced colleagues the way with a patient knock spanning 108 balls and featuring only six boundaries.

After Hogg was run out, Clarke was caught on the mid-wicket boundary off Pathan, who also snapped up Nathan Bracken in the same 47th over as three wickets fell for three runs.

India, who were without Virender Sehwag because of a back strain, suffered an early blow when Tendulkar was lbw trying to flick Bracken across the line.

And they lost three more wickets for four runs as Pathan edged James Hopes to gully, Gautam Gambhir slashed Johnson to backward point and Rohit Sharma lazily wafted Hopes behind.

Yuvraj, who clubbed Hogg over mid-on for six, and Dhoni set about repairing the damage in aggressive fashion with some meaty blows to bring up the fifty partnership in quick time.

However, Yuvraj undid his good work by smacking a Hogg long-hop to wide long-on where Clark took a good catch and Dhoni, who was using a runner because of cramp, was brilliantly run out by Hayden to make it 134-6.

Mitchell Johnson saw the last recognised batsman Robin Uthappa nick behind for 18 after Harbhajan had skied a pull off him as the visitors succumbed in tame fashion.

If Indian bowlers could succeed to bowl out the Aussie to a low score then the Aussies bowlers did better than that, bowling the side to a very fine victory.

With that India wasted an easy opportunity, to enhance their chances to get into the finals thus leaving Sri Lanka in an advantageous position to get into the finals.

The Aussies are ahead with 17 points and the Indians 8 with their last match coming up tomorrow against Sri Lanka on 6 points.

All what Sri Lanka has to do is beat India get the 4 points and forge ahead with 10 points, to send India packing out of the tournament and meet the Aussies in the finals.

Hope our guys put up a good all round performance and guide Sri Lanka to the finals!

Australia not setting fast bouncy tracks for this series.
All teams struggle to pass 300 mark.

Fast bowlers and Spinners not getting assistance, only orthodox bowlers making batsman to struggle.

Teams have to change there approach to wards 250 mark, with more all rounders to perform.

Damed,

That was known before the series started, and that was why Malinga Bandara's ommission became a debated topic back home!

The struggle is on all the participating teams, and yesterday Michael Clarke's patient innings was full of character, which made all the difference in the end.

Sangakkara needs support......Sri Lanka wins!

Zaha,
Malinga reasonable in another way,as tracks not supporting Spinners Even Murali struggle to deliver../

Lankan's have included All rounders, with less experience but whom are capable of moving the ball,,but they are not consistent in both departments.

While Recognize Batsmen failing continuously in Middle Order,I offer a change in Batting order.or hoping someone to stay there with a supportive roll.

they would have kept prasanna ?

Damed,

Prasanna is a good bat no doubt, but it would have hampered Sri Lanka's strategy of employing 4 seamers plus Murali as at least 6 solid bats in the line up is also a necessity.

Murali is a marked man as always, the opposing bats are taking their chances to unsettle him and so far they have managed in doing that successfully.

To give more variation in the bowling department, i feel they should have opted for Malinga Bandara, as he can also deliver some useful runs with the bat as well.

One out of the top order should try to anchor the innings (not Sangakkara always) and more importantly rotate the strike a factor we lacked badly, which contributed in going down to the Aussies last time.

I'm not particular about Malinga's Bat performance,As you have written../ Variation yes..what others deliver.

lankan bowlers slowly getting applied to.

Sanga expect new comer to score faster which made the disasters.though they are capable but not in real form.

Aussie and Indian Captains changed Bowlers, well up to dislocate batsman where lankans fail to do it.

Not easy go with Half of the side out of form...??
