Sunday, 3 February 2008 - 9:01 PM SL Time

A suicide bomber blew herself up at the main railway station in Sri Lanka - `s capital Sunday killing eight people and wounding 100 more, the military and a hospital official said. The rebels have been fighting since 1983 for an independent homeland for Sri Lanka - `s ethnic minority Tamils after decades of being marginalized by Sinhalese-dominated governments. More than 700 people have been killed in intensified violence since the government withdrew from a cease-fire with the separatist Tamil guerrillas last month. Civilians have borne the brunt of the violence.

LTTE air raid warning on the independence day
Sunday, 3 February 2008 - 9:51 AM SL Time

Intelligence wings have warned the government that the LTTE might fly its aircrafts on the 60th Independence Day celebrations on February 04.

The aim of the mission is identified as launching an air raid or sheer propaganda. Intelligence sectors have informed the government to aware the relevant authorities to keep the Air Force alert since LTTE will believe that the Air Force will focus their primary attention to the parades.

Intelligence wings have further instructed to strengthen the security of the camps in risky positions since the LTTE might plan a mass destruction in an operation to be carried out with underground entry.

Military versus 17,000 LTTE cadres in `Final Battle` or `Highway of Death`
Sunday, 3 February 2008 - 8:26 AM SL Time
President Mahinda Rajapakse calls it the `Final Battle` while the LTTE speaks of a `Highway of Death` terminology apart, the North-East war should be over in about four to five months time, authoritative military sources said.

This takes us to the battle front and the much disputed LTTE strength or more precisely its manpower.

The sources speaking to the `Sunday Island`, said that the LTTE has between 15,000 to 17,000 cadres. `But, only a small percentage of this number is battle hardened. Their sea tigers add up to around 1,500. The others are mostly new recruits who have yet to face the litmus test.`

Controversy over truckload of UNICEF biscuits in Sri Lanka ends
Friday, 1 February 2008 - 7:52 PM SL Time
A UN Children s Fund (UNICEF) consignment of high-protein biscuits impounded by police a week ago on suspicion that it was going to the rebel Tamil Tigers has been released today.

The detention of the consignment, destined for malnourished children in northern Sri Lanka, came at a time of heightened security and scrutiny in the north as fighting between government forces and Tamil Tigers intensified.

The container with its driver and his assistant were stopped at Madavachchiya town, 150km from the capital, Colombo on 26 January. The truck driver had no papers to clarify the ownership status or destination of the goods.

Police sources from Madavachchiya said initial investigations have revealed that high protein biscuits of this kind are used by combatants as rations, the Government Information Department stated in a release on 28 January.

Instead of punishing Mervyn, SLRC workers being harassed - JVP
Friday, 1 February 2008 - 11:46 AM SL Time
Though SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena and other senior Ministers promised to take disciplinary action against Minister Mervyn Silva, who along with some thugs entered the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and assaulted the News Director, so far nothing positive has happened. Instead, investigations were being made to victimise the workers of the Rupavahini Corporation, JVP trade union leader, Parliamentarian K. D. Lalkantha told The Island yesterday (31).

The entire country knew what had happened at the SLRC but now there were investigations taking place against the employees who are being questioned as to who authorised the use of cameras, air time and so forth, he said.

Sri Lanka Army dumps dead soldiers in the stretches of Arippu
Thursday, 31 January 2008 - 7:47 AM SL Time
Sri Lanka Army in Mannaar, while under-reporting their casualties in the fighting, has been dumping tractor-loads of dead soldiers in the delta of Aruvi Aa`ru (Malwattu Oya), the area emptied of people after capturing it from the LTTE last year. Two Sri Lanka Army soldiers, escaping from the battlefield with the help of local residents have said that their fellow troopers killed in the battle were being dumped near a coconut palm grove at Ooral, a locality 1 km south of Aruvi Aa`ru and few kilometers east of the coastline between Arippu and Chilaavatturai.

Hundreds of wounded SLA soldiers were sent to various hospitals in the adjacent district headquarters and in the South while their fellow soldiers who died in the battlefield did not receive military honors or proper funeral, reportedly according to instructions from the top.

Pakistan expresses gratitude for Lanka s stance
Friday, 1 February 2008 - 11:53 AM SL Time
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf yesterday welcoming Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama who is on a two day visit to Pakistan, expressed Pakistan s deep gratitude to Sri Lanka for the principled position adopted at the Commonwealth.

The President said he was grateful to Minister Bogollagama, who had strongly argued against Pakistan s suspension from the Commonwealth at the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG).

President Musharraf said it was unfortunate that the Commonwealth had to hastily enforce the suspension, being unwilling to allow Pakistan the time required to operationalise reforms.

He expressed the hope that the Commonwealth would adopt a more realistic appreciation of the steps taken by Pakistan for the consolidation of democracy in the country.

Mannar bishop denies LTTE presence in church
Friday, 1 February 2008 - 11:52 AM SL Time
The Mannar Bishop, Rev Rayappu Joseph, said yesterday that he had strictly ordered the LTTE not to enter the Madhu Church premises for any purpose.

We have strictly told the LTTE to leave the church alone as it is a religious place, he said.

Dismissing the claim made by Minister Keheliya Rambukwella that the LTTE was moving about freely in the church premises, the bishop said there had been no armed LTTE cadres in the vicinity during the past few days, after strict orders were issued by him.

He explained that he made such a request as people come and camp just outside the church, especially at festival time. However, the bishop said, there was a jungle beyond the camp site where the LTTE may loiter, especially at night. Since this area is full of scrub we don t really know what goes on there at night, he added.

Sri Lankans Asked To Work from home to save energy
Friday, 1 February 2008 - 11:49 AM SL Time
Harsha Wickramasinghe, Deputy Director General of the Sustainable Energy Authority, called for `changes in lifestyle` Wednesday to help keep energy demands sustainable. He suggested the reinvention of home-working in a `virtual office`, to cut out energy consumption from transport and office blocks. Both transportation and office blocks consume large amounts of energy daily, particularly in hotter countries where air-conditioning is essential.

This proposal came amid worries that Sri Lanka s growing demands for energy would be unsustainable for the future, with rising oil prices and increased demand on gas and timber reserves. Global-warming is also becoming a worry for Sri Lanka s conservationists with CO2 emissions now rising over 12 million tons, although Sri Lanka remains a relatively small polluter, compared to global emissions.

An abortion of justice in Sri Lanka
Friday, 1 February 2008 - 11:48 AM SL Time
So, the witch-hunt against the Rupavahini workers who had the pluck to stand up to some political vermin who set upon them at their workplace continues at full throttle.

A not-so-surreptitious attempt, we learn, is being made to victimise those who took part in that famous protest against Minister Mervyn Silva, who entered the Rupavahini Corporation with goons, one of whom assaulted News Director T. M. G. Chandrasekera. What is unfolding there at present is nothing but a glaring travesty of justice which is not only offensive but also shocking to say the least. Threats against the Rupavahini staff are on the increase. On Tuesday, a gang of armed men held the mother of one of the Rupavahini workers and warned her of dire consequences unless her son fell in line. A Rupavahini producer is already in hospital, following an attack by an unidentified gang.

A savage act of terror!
Thursday, 31 January 2008 - 7:50 AM SL Time
It is shocking that nine children have been killed in a claymore mine blast in Mannar. No sooner had the explosion occurred than the LTTE blamed it on the army, which denied the allegation as an attempt by the LTTE to cover up its humiliating defeat on the battlefront. What is of concern to the civilized world is not so much who really triggered the explosion but the fact that a group of school children happened to be at the receiving end. That crime must be condemned unreservedly!

The military lacks credibility to convince the discerning public that it wasn`t responsible for that heinous crime. The LTTE has no credibility at all to sell its version of the incident to the world. It has proved how savage it could become in unleashing violence to further its military interests. An outfit that derives a bestial pleasure by shooting, cutting and chopping unarmed civilians including children is capable of anything. Blasting a busload of children is child`s play for a bunch of such savages. They are no respecters of their victims` ethnicity or religion. It was only the other day that the LTTE killers targeted a bus at Buttala with a claymore mine and opened fire on the survivors.

Why southern consensus eludes us
Tuesday, 29 January 2008 - 4:07 AM SL Time

The JVP is on the warpath over the government`s move to evolve a solution based on the so-called Indian model and set up an Interim Council for the Northern Province. Vowing to mobilise the people against the government`s devolution plans and not to look back until they are shot down, it has questioned the legitimacy of the All Party Representative Committee (APRC), which lacks the representation of the UNP and the JVP. One couldn`t agree with the JVP more. The APRC is a gag wrapped in a charade inside a sham. However, the JVP has said it is amenable to the 13th Amendment so long as it is not implemented on the lines suggested by the APRC.

Cricket`s day of Shame
Thursday, 31 January 2008 - 7:50 AM SL Time
World cricket authorities have caved in to the game`s financial superpower, India, and Cricket Australia has incurred the wrath of its own Test players by pressuring them to drop a racial slur charge against Harbhajan Singh.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India had even chartered a plane to take its players home tomorrow if the Indian player`s three-Test suspension - for calling Australia`s Andrew Symonds a monkey during the Sydney Test - had not been overturned at yesterday`s appeal in the Federal Court in Adelaide.

Cricket Australia was anxious to have the charge dropped because it feared its board would be sued for a figure understood to be about $60 million if India quit the tour. India`s broadcast partner, ESPN, owns the lucrative contract to beam cricket from Australia into the subcontinent. If ESPN sued successfully, it could take 10 years to recoup the losses, Cricket Australia told the players.

Sri Lanka U-19 beat England
Tuesday, 29 January 2008 - 4:07 AM SL Time
The Sri Lanka under 19 team bounced back into recognition with a fine all round performance as they trounced the England under 19 by 158 runs in their Tri Series limited overs cricket match worked off at the SSC ground in Maitland Place yesterday.

The Lankans rattled up a huge 312 for 7 from their 50 overs after electing to bat first and then skittled out their opponents for just 154 runs from 35 overs.

This was no doubt a tremendous improvement by the Sri Lanka under 19 team following their crushing nine wicket defeat at the hands of their Pakistan counterparts on Sunday. Their success have also kept their hopes alive of qualifying into the final with two victories from four outings.

Sri Lanka`s second straight win against England was fashioned by a brilliant unbeaten century from their vice captain Dinesh Chandimal and all rounder Sachith Pathirana. The former hit an unbeaten 112 from 132 deliveries with the help of one six and ten boundaries.
