Katuwanwila gripped by fear

An armed group extorting money has struck fear among people in villages like Katuwanvila and Welikanda in Polonnaruwa.

Several villages who wished to remain anonymous told the Daily Mirror that this politically backed armed group based in the village called Thivuchchena is stalking the villagers day and night.

They said these armed men extorted money from businessmen and cattle owners.

If we refuse to pay Kappan , they would threaten at gun point to seize our cattle. Many head of cattle have already been killed by them, they said.

Villagers say that even the police do not take action against these armed members.

We have nowhere to go and make a complaint. The police don t accept our complaints. Even fishermen and woodcutters have to pay them Kappan. Otherwise, their lives would be in peril, a villager said.

However, a senior police officer based in the area said law and order was intact in the area, and therefore there was no basis for such allegations.

He said this armed group was helpful to the security forces in curbing LTTE terrorism.

There are a handful of miscreants in the group. They too come out of the jungle only for operational purposes. Otherwise, there is no problem in the area, he said. (KB)

Ariyalai

Yes, I take your point. I am not in any illusion that LTTE had ever intended to settle for a federal set up, far from it, LTTE is about Eelam let s not around the bush. LTTE is also an unelected body that exist only on the basis that the Sinhalese cannot offer the Tamils any sort of a solution, this is their mandate. Only thing that the Sinhalese need to is to eliminate that platform, and they can do that through the APRC. The IC is asking the same, and any sane person would ask the same.

i understand your point.

but

opportunities wont come always. when it comes our way we have to grab it.

i can say two instances tamil people and ltte missed the opportunity to solve this problem through negotiation.

one opportunity was when CBK was elected in 1994/1995 . at that time many sinhalese were for peaceful solution and tigers have not capitalised on that opportunity to solve the problem. the way the they had negotiation is not very mature. they bogged down on day today issues without touching the core issue.

similar opportunity was missed through norway facilitation. here also they bogged down on solving day to day issues and refused to talk core issues.

so now sinhalese have become hardlined and there wont be any peace talks with ltte at present condition unless ltte turnes the tide in their favour.that is the reality

lolz

Correction! Only against LTTE. While LTTE is running for life Tamils are enjoying life in Jaffna. Check following link. This is how liberated areas looks like in Lanka.
