Why is the judiciary a part of determining prices of anything ? .

Doesn't this seem strange to anybody ?

No it is not strange. I don't know the basis of the case on which this was ruled but price gouging will not be tolerated by a court of law when the consumer was at the mercy of the supplier.

Remember the case between BC Utility of Canada and the State of California.

As far as I can remember, it has something to do with deregulation of energy market.

Recent example was when an environmental group try to force the Canadian government to abide by the Kyoto agreement, Canadian
supreme court refuse to hear the case as the supreme court can not
make rulings which would effect the revenue stream of the government.

Energy market was deregulated and BC Utility sold power at a price it deemed was fair. After the fact California challenged the price and the court agreed. BC had to pay back.

The Cabinet decided to defer the Supreme Court Order

Such is the state of affairs in Sri Lanka.

The government deferred 13th and 17th Amendments to the Constitution.

The government also deferred the implementation of the Tamil official language legislation.

Will not matter unless they can prevent LIOC selling gas at 100. Otherwise people will tend to look for the lower price.
