please send white van to sarath's house
Even from the scant information available, it is clear the war is taking a terrible toll. In an interview with the state-owned Sunday Observer on December 7, army chief Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka explained that 16,000 soldiers had been injured by the LTTE's mortar and artillery attacks. While boasting that the military was in the final stages of winning the war, he mentioned in passing that the army had been authorised to make a massive expansion from 130,000 to 200,000 personnel.
Last weekend's Sunday Leader concluded that 'the country has just endured the bloodiest year in its 25-year history of waging and surviving war'. Based on defence department reports of LTTE and army casualties and media reports of the civilian deaths, the newspaper's journalists estimated the 10,500 people have died so far this year twice the figure for 1995,

Thivya,
Some Sinhalese are pretending and making fun of Tamil Nadu. Compared to Tamil Nadu population, Sri Lanka also has that problem
They make mockery of 5 lakh Wanni Population having a open toilet in Wanni...Does that not mean Sorrylankans perform in Open toilet like Indians ?
Or they dont consider TAmils as Srilankans ?
let them clarify first this ...whether the Tamils why are made to use Open toilet are srilankans or not ! |

What you don t want to know
I am not going to mince words here. The attempt to charge the current Sri Lanka Army Commander and the President s brother with war crimes distracts from the even more insidious reality of the political bankruptcy of the State. When the dust finally settles on the ongoing world economic crisis (meltdowns in some cases), Sri Lanka will be forced to reconcile with Reality Check 101. What is the Sri Lankan economy based on? It had been sustained by foreign bank loans, foreign direct investments, remittances sent by expatriate workers, garment and tea exports, and the tourism industry. Sri Lanka s economy is still an under-developed economy that relies heavily on foreign remittances and exports generated by low-skilled labor. Yet, it has been waging costly war that is not only unsustainable, but is doing permanent damage to its economy and its people. The political elite in Colombo and the military leaders in Vanni should all be punished by the people of Sri Lanka for ruining the country's chances to have a fully developed, sustainable economy. The war is continuing to mask these truths:
What is the reality in the northeast part (especially the North) of the country?
There is no functioning economy activity in a sense that is quantifiable and gauged. The economy of this region has been devastated. The war has completely ruined the infrastructure needed to support commerce. It will take something like a Marshall Plan to rebuild the infrastructure and develop an economy suitable for meeting the challenges posed by globalization (in addition to meeting the local demand for food).
The Tamil culture is also in the process of being slowly choked off of whatever life it still had prior to the onset of current military engagements more than three years ago(not just two going back to Mavilaru). Many of the people with the skills and knowledge needed to rebuild its society and the economy have left the country all together. I doubt many of them will ever come back. What the Boxing Day Tsunami didn't take away from the people, the war did and came back for more. Many of the houses and fishing hamlets reconstructed after the Tsunami have been destroyed again. I call it double whammy effect (tripe for some). Is man more evil than nature?

What is the source of economic activity (or opportunities for the youths) in the rest of the country?
- Find a low-paid job in the government sector.
- Go to foreign countries to meet the demand for low-skilled labor.
- Join the army it pays well, better than what even a teacher earns.
- Work in tourism related industries.
- Work in garment factories or other environmentally polluting industries set up by the foreign investors.
Can you see the pattern here? Too much reliance on the monetary wealth of foreign States to bankroll Sri Lanka's economy. Is a domino effect possible if Sri Lanka is left to feel the real pinch from the crash in oil prices (lesser demand for foreign workers in the Middle East) and Europeans and Indians cutting back on foreign travels? Faced with a recession, many of the consumers in US who had earlier bought London Fog, Tomy Hilfiger and Nautica brand clothes (made in Sri Lanka) at upscale retailers are now buying cheaper brands (made in China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc) from Sears and WalMart. You all know what the economic crisis in Russia is doing to the prices of Sri Lanka s tea. If smart people with the brains (and vision) to lead the country in a new direction don t take the helm in Colombo soon, your country will never shake off its association with the 3rd World. The US, EU and Japan are in the process of spending trillions of dollars (much of it obtained through borrowing from their own people and other foreign States) to jump-start their economies. The world has never seen such a financial and economic crisis on this scale. You can blame it on globalization, greed and lack of oversight over financial markets. But, what is happening is much more than that. There is a new world order shaping up. Sri Lanka will be given a life raft to survive this transition period. That is all.
