Government avoids reducing petrol price for the second time covering to non-delivery of Supreme Court ruling
(Lanka-e-News, Dec.19, 2008, 12.00 PM) The cabinet yesterday (18) called off for the second time the decision to reduce the price of a liter of petrol to Rs. 100, in accordance with the Supreme Court ruling to do so since midnight December 17.
The communiqu issued by the Government Information Director last night (18) says, 'President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his cabinet of Ministers held a special meeting today (18) which continued until 8 pm.
'All the Ministers excluding eight who are at present out of the country were present at this meeting.
'The cabinet had not received an official copy of the Supreme Court's determination pertaining to the revision of the fuel price even by the time the session ended.
'The Cabinet of Ministers unanimously decided to discuss the issue when it was intimated officially of the Supreme Court's decision.
'Accordingly the existing fuel price will remain unchanged.'
Commenting on the situation, petitioner Ravi Jayawardhana said to 'Lanka-e-News' that the Supreme Court issued the directive to the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance who appeared in the courts with a price formula. The Supreme Court has ordered the directive to be sent in writing to the Secretary and he is bound to discuss the matter with the relevant Minister and to implement the order. Counsel Ravi Jayawardhana said that a written order to the cabinet was unnecessary and the cabinet was performing a trick to avoid the court ruling.
