Sri Lankan troops have captured Tamil Tiger defences near the rebels` political headquarters after heavy fighting, the government said Thursday.
Soldiers were conducting `counter-terrorist operations` along the northern and northwestern defences of Kilinochchi, the political capital of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the defence ministry said.
It said the military carried out at least 10 bombing sorties against Tamil Tiger positions on Wednesday as ground troops faced stiff rebel resistance.
The LTTE said it repelled the multi-pronged offensive by government forces, killing 170 soldiers and wounding 420 on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The military rejected rebel claims and said they lost only 25 soldiers.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa`s government has been predicting the imminent fall of Kilinochchi for months, and the military recently said it was within `kissing distance` of the town.
But heavy rebel resistance and monsoon rains have slowed the army offensive.
In January the Sri Lankan government pulled out of a 2002 Norwegian-brokered truce.
The rebels have been fighting since 1972 for a state for ethnic minority Tamils separate from the majority Sinhalese community.

Army Troops Identify Eighteen Dead Soldiers
VAVUNIYA: ARMY authorities at OMANTHAI Entry/Exit point are now in the process of identifying twenty-five corpses, said to be those belonging to valiant troops after those remains were brought to the point by officials of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) as the dusk fell on Thursday (18).
The Army has so far identified only eighteen of them since some of them were badly mutilated or injured. However, the Army is to decide on the remaining seven soon after preliminary investigations are over. All of them sacrificed their lives during pitched battles that raged in the WANNI theatre of war during the past few days.
Meanwhile, Army troops delivered one dead body of a Tiger to the ICRC around the same time on Thursday (18) across the OMANTHAI Entry/Exit point. Fifteen more Tigers killed in the fighting and scheduled to be delivered to the ICRC still remain at VAVUNIYA hospital.

Give credit to VP!
He introduced new weapons! The world sees them for the first time and they are devastating!
The war turned in VP's favor now! It could be a 'Jayasikuru' re-run from now on!
