The object of war is not to die for your country, but to make the other bastard die for his -General George S. Patton
Patton's defence attache is all praise for the SLA for conducting a war against terrorists and maintaining minimal civilian casualties in the war. they want to get further info to apply the theories in iraq and afghanistan |

The Awakening by Yarlan
Please go the following link for the article in Sunday Leader. Read it. And read it again. And again, until you realize what this war has been doing to the young men and teenagers in Sri Lanka. Even though, the Sunday Leader article was written based on what the war veterans are going through from the Sinhalese side, I can assure you, that it is the same story on the Tamil side also. A little secret for some of you in case you never heard about it (what are the odds of that?) Both the Sri Lanka Army and the LTTE at times have to send the bodies back to their families in sealed coffins. Sometimes, they are burned after the battles. Because, 'they' are no longer 'whole' bodies in the sense you can identify a person with. When these Sinhala and Tamil youths catch direct artillery or mortar fire (not everyone can run to the safety of bunkers in a matter of seconds), often what is left are the body parts or completely disfigured bodies. I heard that sometimes you can't even tell who is who. So, you end up with the sealed coffins.

I wrote the following last week, with the Sinhala supporters of the war in mind. Then I realized that everything written applies in equal measure to the Tamil supporters of war as well. Let us end this madness once and for all.
Denial of One s Existence
To those Sinhalese who continue to refer to the LTTE fighters as 'terrorists' while at the same time asking the Sri Lankan Tamils to let the bygones be bygones:
1. Learn to value the lives of those Tamil soldiers at least as much as you value the lives of your Sinhala soldiers. You are trying to hide the fundamental truth of who is at war here (and with whom).
2. I would not try to engage engage in a conversation with you if we don t believe that you cannot place a value on someone s life while denigrating the life another. Do you value the lives of Tamils as much as you value yours?
3. The parents of the Tamil youths dying in the battle fronts had as much hope and dreams for their children as the parents of Sinhala youths dying in the battle fronts have.
4. A path to peace and reconciliation between two peoples separated by a vast ocean of pain, anger, and mistrust cannot be created by a path through war and destruction. You can have either peace or war, but not a state of existence where both can co-habit. If you chose the correct path, then you can help heal the open wounds so many Tamils and Sinhalese have.
My final thoughts to everyone: if you consider yourself a true Buddhist, then lead by example. If you really believe in the principles of Hinduism, then follow its true meanings. Don t spread the message of hate towards another human being or promote the taking of another human being s life in the name of land, language or God. In the end, if there is a God after all, he will punish you all for your hatred and cruelty towards others. With all the threats and challenges facing the forces that sustain life on Earth, humanity may not even survive into the next century.

HMS,
Gons...2000hrs here...me heading to my retreat for a chilled lion lager :)
Back in the day, Lion Larger used to come from Lanka Breweries in Nuwara Eliya.. brewed with spring water. They had a place where you could buy pitchers of unfiltered lion larger straight from the tap. Now the stuff is made in biyagama or someplace.. I tried it last time I was back home and the taste was different.. But still much better than the other stuff there.
Cheers mate ! |
