12,000 soldiers died during Mahinda rule - Range Bandara

Lankan News Replies

Twelve thousand soldiers have died in war during the three-year rule of Mahinda Rajapaksa, while a similar number has become maimed in the same period, said UNP MP Palitha Range Bandara.

At least 8,000 young women have become widowed, as most of these dead are between 19 and 27 years of age, he told a media briefing at the Opposition Leader`s Office in Colombo today (Dec. 03rd).

The government, in the near future, will have to suffer repercussions of the loss of this young strength, the MP said, adding that it was unfair the widows lose payments for their late husbands, if they remarry under existing laws.

He said, `This government is waging war to suit its political agenda, and not in accordance with military strategies to minimize casualties among our heroic soldiers.`

`The Heroes Day speech by LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran reaffirmed the UNP had no dealings with the LTTE and the ceasefire agreement of our government has sent the LTTE reeling militarily, while the government had become strong, both militarily and economically,` said Mr. Range Bandara.

Speaking further, he said, `The government boasts that it had entirely liberated Eastern Province, but the LTTE has staged 13 Heroes Day ceremonies in Batticaloa and Ampara. In other areas of the East, Heroes Day functions have taken place at six locations.`

Also speaking here, UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara called on all artistes to set aside political differences and unite against threats to their field.

`This government is completely censoring the creations of artistes who are politically its opponents. The president gives a lot of publicity for artistes who agree with him, and attacks those who oppose him.`

`The best example is that he bans the film `Leader` by Ranjan Ramanayake and recommends `Aba` by Jackson Anthony as a `must-see` film,` he said.

`It is a joke that Asoka Serasinghe, as chairman of State Film Corporation had approved a Rs. 04 million loan for `Leader`, but, as head of the Public Performance Board, has censored the same film,` Mr. Jayasekara added.

'12,000 soldiers died during Mahinda rule '

The flower of the nation, and its future is being put to death, and for what?

Do the 8,000 widows, and numerous more family members, from the past three years believe that their loss is worthy cost for the continuance of the present situation?

Military action has not and will not bring about peace. There has never been in history such a situation that was resolved by use of violence, why does the present Government think that it can beat history?

A peaceful resolution that involved ALL sides is the only way forward. When will the 'Leaders' on both sides realise this?

Sri Lanka is a free country. People have the freedom to say anything against the government, the police or the forces even while the country is fighting a bloody war.

Imagine doing this in N.Korea, Cuba, China, Saudi Arabia and many other countries in the world!

Wow, look @ all these comments. Just understand that these are ture figures, and the SRI LANAKan government is giving out these numbers, and DEFENCE.LK often/always boasts its victories, saying that only 1 or 2 army died, and atleast 50 LTTE died. Well newsflash:sinahala people you have been listening to a very false website whcih has tricked you from the start, and just remeber that its your sinahala brothers and sisters that are coming into the FDL's and are getting killed, so tell your MAHINDA rajapaske government to lay down arms, and come to the Table.

Prabaharan is ready whenever to come to the table and talk.

all of these ppl, are starting to understand that mahinda was lying to them. Remeber, if mahinda is saying that they are killing all the LTTE, then why are the SLA forces still 2km away from kilinochi.

2km can be walked there and back by an old lady in less than an hour, so Mahinda please stop bullshiting your people, and understand that you are stuck.
