Falling world prices, escalating production costs and severe working capital shortages threaten the sustainability of Sri Lanka s tea industry and the industry warns of absolute chaos if drastic measures are not taken by the state.
There are 655 tea factories buying tea from small holders. Of these, 15 have already closed down.
'It is likely that other factories would close down during the second half of this month for the want of money to run day to day operations,' Anil Perera, Chairman PTFOA, told the Island Financial Review.
The PTFOA said that Sri Lankan teas are rapidly losing its traditional markets to India.
It said the Indian government has given the tea industry incentives to develop its markets and production capacities and as a result Sri Lankan teas are relatively high priced.
