Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament yesterday that the Government appointing Ajith Nivard Cabraal as Governor of the Central Bank was like entering a donkey to win the Derby.
well I dont think Mr.Cabral would be effective for this position.. considering some of the comments he has made in the past about SL economy.. also this coming out of Ranil he should reform his party first.. |

Bassa,
You are equating the calm beneath the surface in Jaffna Peninsular with the people's acceptance of status quo. I know these people. At the moment, they are more concerned about day-to-day survival than anything else. The basic needs of food, shelter and security outweigh other more mundane considerations. But, if you give them a real democratic opportunity to choose between having to live under Colombo's rule and to live in a society that is free from the Sri Lanka Army camps in every corner, what do you think they will choose? Think about it. Almost the entirety of the Sri Lankan armed forces is made of Sinhala personnel, while almost the entirety of the population in Jaffna Peninsular is Tamil. Imagine if the situation were reversed and you have a standing army, made up of mostly Tamils, in Matara. Would I mistake the calm beneath the surface with the Matara Sinhalese's acceptance of the status quo?
The earnings to be a free man is an idea, an expression deeply rooted in one's mind. You cannot extinguish it with bombs, bullets and mass graves. Even if you almost succeed in physically destroying (killing) the LTTE fighters, you cannot do the same to someone who wants to be free of tyranny imposed from outside. He will even accept a modicum of tyranny from forces within in the hope that one day, the source of external tyranny will be vanquished. As much as Saddam Hussein tried, quite literally to stamp out the Kurdish aspirations for a free Kurdistan, what happened in the end? Imagine how long the Jewish people held alive the hope for their homeland. Some could argue that it took Hitler's Holocaust to wake up the people's conscience. Nevertheless, the idea of restoring the Jewish homeland existed even prior to the advent of Hitler. Remember, if George Washington didn't lead a war of independence against the British Crown, for what he rightfully saw as the imposition of external tyranny in the colonies, there wouldn't be the United States of America as we know it today. His men engaged not only in set-piece conventional style battles against the British, but resorted to all sorts of guerrilla warfare tactics as well. What motivated the mind of George Washington to lead his army to victory? His burning desire to be a free man in his land. |

One thing that is hard in this forum is to try to convince or get your message across. Most of the posts will go on racial lines.. |
